aftermarket exhaust v6 4x4 (no drone options)

I keep having this debate over and over in my head, and still can't come to any conclusion. I'm interested in an exhaust system for a 2008 4R v6 4x4, but am very specific to what I'm after. I don't want any annoying drone, or 'hissing'. If it improves fuel economy, fantastic... but CANNOT hurt it. It also has to LOOK better than ugly stock pipes, and any stainless steel exhaust system looks much better IMO. I don't care too much about the loud sound, though I would expect it to be somewhat louder than stock just not stupid loud where it annoys everybody around you... but main focus is sound quality and performance, not really volume. I also would prefer side exit (behind tire, like the Y magnaflow tip) but probably could live with straight rear exit, just think the side exit looks better. I don't know what I should go with, like borla/magnaflow/gibson, etc, or perhaps talk to a local muffler/performance shop and explain to them what I'm looking for and see what they can come up with...maybe something custom.

I love how it looks, but I thought there was drone with that system?
 
sorry, but i still find it funny that people want/buy an aftermarket exhaust/cat back, then complain about droning. if u search the forum im sure u will find numerous threads with guys complaining about drone with almost every brand, magnaflow, gibson, borla, trd, etc., even when referring to the same brand, u will find 1/2 say it drones, the other 1/2 say no drone & they love it ,who knows, personally, i like to hear the exhaust, & the borla is perfect for me. maybe some are just not use to hearing the sound of a louder performance exhaust VS stock. either way, a resonater would help with droning at highway speeds & a good HU can drown out almost anything.

I guess i'll just have to try the TRD exhaust and see how i like it.
 
heres my take on it, some people think the stock system seems alittle too quiet when driving around town, but on the highway at 60-70+ may think it sounds fine & not want it any louder at that speed. so they install an aftermarket muffler/system & say they like it around town , but it drones on the highway, forgetting to realize that its going to be louder through out the whole sound range, unless it has a resonater to help cancel some unwanted exhaust notes out . the stock pipes are fairly good, dont expect a big difference in mpg with an aftermarket system, some even get less since they're thrilled by the sound & get on it more. so imo, maybe get a flowmaster 50, Performance mufflers a dirtydeeds http://www.toyota-4runner.org/perfo...t-got-dirtydeeds-muffler-installed-my-v6.html or whatever brand u like,( usually a largermuffler is somewhat quieter) & get the shop to remove the stock resonater, & install a pipe angled to the side, possibly with a resonated tip if u want.

What about this idea... I thought maybe a 22" or 24" magnaflow center/offset muffler 2.5in in/out, with stainless piping throughout, side exit behind tire... and a nice looking tip. I just want it to last/be durable, and not be too loud... especially cruising speeds. I won't punch it unless I have to...

Google BassAss Mufflers from dirtydeeds. I'm trying to find time to order one. I had a Magnaflow but the drone was too much for me.

I wanted to share my experience with this idea; sorry for the resurrection. On my last 2007 Tacoma DC I must have gone thru 4 different mufflers; props go out to the patience of my local muffler shop. I tried the Flowmaster 50 series Delta, but it had too much drone then on to a off brand "flo something" and it sounded better, but still too much drone. Then I contacted another muffler shop where the owner had an FJ stating that the he had a 24" Magnaflow on his and thought it was the Toyota V6 sweet spot muffler. I took his advice and got the 24"...I must say it sounded perfect for what I was looking for; which was slight pur at idle, little growl on acceleration and zero drone.

Your setup above of the 24" with side exit pipe is what I'm doing next. :surfer:

im still debating if im gonig to replace my stock muffler or not. i recently removed the resonator and slight angled with a nice tip for now. it was day and night difference in appearance, so much better than the ugly stock resonator and straight rear exit. I do like the idea of better sounding exhaust, but definantly don't want drone or it being too loud where it annoys me or others around. i see trucks with such loud exhaust all the time and it's a bit tacky. If I do decide to go with the big magnaflow muffler, would expect to re-use this nice tip...it was like $100 to get it installed.
