Aftermarket hood with scoop

That's not what I would consider "aftermarket". It is a non-Toyota replacement 10-16 Trail hood panel. The scoop is what identifies the Trail as such vs SR5 and Limited having body graphics. Hence it should be a direct bolt on. But you also would need to source the parts to fill in the front of the "scoop". AND buy a pair of really good sunglasses.
 
I emailed the seller to ask about the plastic portion that goes inside the scoop. Will post reply when I get it

Why sunglasses? Is it because the hood scoop looks so much cooler? :thumb3:
 
Glare. Interesting. Never had glare from the scoop on 2008. Maybe the angle is different. Is glare a problem on all colors?
 
Yup! I have quicksand and at certain angles of the sun it sucks.

I swapped my sr5p hood with another member on the boards. Yes, there is sun glare on ocayion, but not enough to get me off my ass and vynal wrap the scoop.

The rooftop lighting is a new one for me. Waiting for a wireing harness and install a cheep ass bar from evil bay. So, I'll find out eventually.

It only bothers me in the first and last hour of the day when I am driving into the sunrise and sunset. Which just happens to be my commute for the past month on a new job. Actually there will be some glare off the normal hood at these times anyway, but the scoop does seem to increase it. And it's INCREDIBLE against a clean OMG White hood! I find myself hoping for a little cloud cover mornings and evenings lately. :fear:

Mind you that scoop was one of the selling points for me, but it can have it's drawbacks.
 
If anyone is curious -- the hood from eBay (mentioned in 1st post) fit on my SR5 perfectly. It arrived primed. Did some wet-sanding to get it really smooth. My dad bought the Magnetic Gray Metallic paint at a local paint shop and sprayed it in his garage (he rebuilds classic cars as a hobby). The first try didn't match because the metallic flakes were larger than the factory paint. My dad performed some magic, kung fu, voodoo and the second application looks unbelievably perfect. I also had to buy the scoop "guts", which cost about $100. Paint, clear coat and whatever else cost about $100. So, for about $450 I now have a cool hood. I haven't had any glare issues despite driving to work heading east in the AM and west in the PM. So glad I can now cross this 1st world problem off my list.
 
The 'glare issue' is subjective. There are very few times when I have had the sun saying hello to me from the scoop. Some act like it's the end of the world, others among us feel that it's fine. I don't think there has been a reported death yet from the deadly bad hood scoop glare issue so glad you decided for. :)

I had the glare issue once or twice. Not sure what the big deal is. No worse than driving east at sunrise or west at sunset.

Yes. All colors. The issue is this - the shiny surface has what's called "specular reflection" - like a mirror. And light reflects on a shiny surface in such a way that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. Like this:

On practically every vehicle the hood slope is designed such that from the eye height of a driver the angle of incidence necessary to reflect light into your eyes is below the horizon. So there is no position in the sky that the sun can physically exist on a normal flat roadway that the sun would reflect into your eyes. The hood scoop's face on top is outside of this normal design parameter. The result is that you do get light reflected directly into your eyes from the sun. Since it's abnormal from almost any common car hood, it's pretty uncomfortable at times.

Polarized sun glasses help a lot because reflected light is mostly polarized. The calculation on this gets kinda tricky because of the clear coat's optical density is kinda unknown to me, and I'll skip the further explanation because I'm lazy. But suffice it to say that polarized sun glasses will help, but it's still going to suck once in a while. I have a white one and it's rare that I drive into the sun, but when I happen to have just the wrong timing - it sucks. I can't lie - I do love the look of the hood scoop though.
