Aftermarket radio issues in 1998 4R

Hey guys,

Recentl i bought a Pioneer deck from Best buy, 1st mistake i know but it was a good deal. Then i bought the wiring harness from them, biggest mistake. So i take out the old radio, which was already aftermarket. This is all after wiring my new harness to the new radio harness.

Get it all apart, go to plug it in, wrong harness plug. Of course. At this time i want to ring the kids neck at best buy. What im wondering is, the harness i bought, came with two separate plugs, like one for the power, dimmer, ground, ignition, etc. Then the other plug, smaller in size had most the speakers on it.

Why does this harness i bought have two plugs but the feed from my truck only has one plug overall for everything? And the two antenna plugs of course. Does the limited version have two seperate or something? I have the SR5. I have two rear door spks, two front door, and two tweeters on the pillars.

Am i missing something here or did i just get the wrong harness overall?

it's most likely the correct wiring harness.

i had the same issue when I replaced the radio in my 1995 4runner. The wiring harness you are seeing is probably coming out of the factory amp. said again, the factory wiring harness that is plugged directly in to the back of the factory radio unit is coming from the amp. you need to reach down to the bottom of the amp (small grey box) and unplug the 2 wiring harnesses from there. there should be two to unplug, and they will match the two you describe.

here's the factory amp and the wiring harness that plugs in to the back of the factory radio. this is probably what you're seeing.

if you look close at the first picture, you'll see there are two ports located at the bottom of the unit. this is what you need to un-plug and connect to the wiring harness you purchased from Best Buy.

Guys , I'm still a little lost forgive me as I'm not too tech savvy.
I have a 99 that has the mentioned two plug system. I'm told my 2000 sr5 calls for the same. After removing the dash I too discover one plug. So do I disregard that single plug coming out of my amp and locate the two as you've shown and simply use those to wore up my new deck.
Again , sorry not the most tech savvy w electronics.

I just recently got my family's 1998 4runner as a play vehicle... The radio doesnt work in it however. I took out the old head unit and plugged it in my 2002 chevy and it worked great, but that means its some sort of issue with the wiring harness. I started checking the continuity on the wiring harness and noticed the orange (i think) one that supplies power when the ignition is 'on' had continuity even when the key was removed... that means there's a short there, right?
I just wanted to get some guidance before I started trying to find that short by tearing everything apart :tape:

p.s. i also checked the fuses that were in the radio, the cabin (below the steering wheel), and the engine compartment. Are there any others to check?

In my modest experience with car stereos, the YELLOW is the Power Lead, The RED is the ignition, and obviously BLACK is always ground. In the aftermarket world (and not speaking for your toyota here) the ORANGE is usually the 'Dimmer' cable, so that the radio dims when you turn on your headlights. I'm not sure if this is the case with your factory harness. My '99 limited I had was pretty easy, and perhaps the same as your '98. ANYWAY, make sure that the harness is not grounding to the car. eg, no exposed wires to the chasis. ALSO MAKE SURE that the harness plugs into the OEM stereo SOLIDLY, with complete connection to the ports. Otherwise, it could throw things off. Food for Thought...
