Aftermarket v8 Header interest?

WE NEED HEADERS $#@!*&....I just helped my buddy install headers on his chevy and i was thinking of how nice they would be on our runners...Please someone design them for us!

Just my 2 cents, I think we would get more bang for the buck by building pieces that were new, mandrel tubing from the ex manifolds to the "cat-back" exhaust. This would replace the 2 stock cats with nice high flow ones (these are the ones right behind the ex manifolds) and getting rid of that nasty and restrictive y-pipe between the first cats and the single exhaust. Yes, I was going to have one built right before I moved from CA, but the shop I was working with could not get me in before I moved

I love your idea...i looked at my engine and was thinking wow itll take at least a week to get headers in that tight spot...so im going to my exhaust shop tom. to see if they can do your idea...badabababa im lovin it :)

Well, if you do and my brain is working right I would have them build a single piece that goes from the manifolds to where the cat-back exhausts hookup, make the cat-back end 2.5" diameter to match most of the aftermarket exhausts and match the "primary" tubes to the size of the dump tube for the manifolds. I believe this would require 3 mangaflow free flow cats in total. Oh, and use all mandrel bent, stainless tubing. :) Let me know what the shop says!

the problem is 3 fold...the stock manifolds are crappy and are a 4-1 design (but not the good header kind!). Also there are a set of cats and another set of resonators (mini cats) following the upstream high temp cats that need to be removed in conjunction with the addition of high flow metallic substraight cats. Finally the Ypipe that toyota hampered the exhaust setup with. Problem is with that, that to keep the same ground clearance as the stock setup you will either need to run the newer ypipes closer to the bottom of the rig or let them hang, thus reducing underside ground clearence by as much as 1/4-1/2 inch.

This is all possible but thus far, I have yet to find a shop here in vegas that I feel comfortable with doing all this kind of work. This isnt a difficult setup to engineer but one that involves alot of fab work.

I would agree with RX on the fact that the stock manifolds can probably be extrude honed to see some power increases but one should not expect the 30hp+ gains that would bee seen with shorty or long tube headers.

Guys/Gals............we need to remember here that we are not building drag cars. Our trucks will benefit most from small diameter, long tube headers as those build torque...........and being a truck motor that spend most of its time under 3,000 rpm we want low end grunt. I have rarely seen a set of shorty headers that did not sacrifice low end for top end power.
As for the ground clearance............isn

A 4-2-1 design would be the best for low/mid range torque and by running slightly larger diameter primaries, we should be able to ensure good exhaust velocity flow for the higher rpm as well. Thus allowing quality flow and power increases across the rev band.

Duc-- as for the ground clearance. Alot of guys are going to be very weary of doing a project that takes ANY amount of ground clearance away even if behind the front wheels. Im okay with it since my rig sees only light to medium duty trails but others might not be into it.

Casper, I agree with you there. I just think having a custom set of headers built would be VERY expensive. I also still believe that our manifolds are not THAT bad given how much HP we produce and where in the rev range we produce it (more related to compression ratio and cam's than headers). Plus, headers will make a lot more heat under the hood, not what I want.

I also looked under my truck. It would be easy to run better pipes with free flow cats and a new y-pipe and keep everything above the frame, where it is stock. A non-CAT option could be made, and single CAT (post y-pipe) and a triple CAT (for those in places like CA that have smog NAZI's). Most of the time a CAT

on our engines, i only see a 3-5 hp difference with running cats versus non.

as for honed manifolds and better runners, i really only see about a 20hp total improvment. Torque is really where the 2uz should pick up good amounts of power.

This is also backed up by this article.

This is a 2005 tundra with full shorty headers and an exhaust and they gained a shade over 20wheel. Which should net to about 25 given drivetrain losses.

I would definitely buy a set of headers and/or a free flowing Y pipe for my V8 4runner if someone would actually produce them! I don't know what JBA is afraid of and why they won't make them?
