Aggressive Tires for my 4Runner?

Hello Guys,

I'm new here and this is my first post, so bare with me until I get to know your culture!

I have 2003 4Runner Limited and it needs new rubbber. The suspension is stock and I have done no mods at all since I bought it new. I want to put the most aggressive tread I can find that will still fit in the standard wheel well. In your experience I was hoping you could point me in the best direction for locating my best option. The truck will see some off road action (Tahoe in the winter etc...) but the car must also be able to handle highway speeds.

I was looking at the BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM, 285/70R 17/D

Is this my best option for all I need?

most folks here report 265/70 as the largest size tire which will fit without rubbing on stock suspension..

BFG AT/KO
Bridgestone Dueler REVOS
Nitto Terragrappler
Goodyear MTR

these are the most commonly talked about..

highway speed or mud terrain... which is more important? might want to consider an all terrain..
 
Current Miles/brand

Currently I have the stock Dunlap AT20's (265/65R/17) and they have 50K miles on them!

I'm really warming up to the idea of the NittoGrapplers's in a 265/70/17 configuration.

They seem to fit with all my concerns and they also have a bit more of an aggressive look.
 
BFG KO's all the way but if you go the M/T route then look at the TOYO M/T. Personally I think they are much better then MTR and BFG M/T with also great characteristics on road.
 
Toyo M/T sizes???

I dont see a Toto M/T that will fit my 4Runner on their site?

I'm looking for a 265/70R/17"

Will another size they make fit?
 
i have the michilen cross terrain suv's...great tires...they lasted me 60k on my first go around, and i just replaced them with the same kind...
 
From personal experience with both is the Nittos handle deep snow pretty much the same as the BFGs but it's when it's slushy and slick or rainy the Nittos take the cake in the control department and resist hydroplaning much better and the Nittos are much cheaper.
Revos are a better choice for those with daily drivers that will see significant mileage over a year or so since they do have a mileage warranty.
 
I recently had 315/75 R17 Mickey Thomson MTZ's fitted to my 2nd gen and I love them......very smooth ride for an agressive tyre, and have performed awesome offroad so far too!! Have only done about 5000kms on them so far, but they look like they'll wear pretty good!

Get the 265/70/17 LT (Light truck E rated) REVOs. They will provide great traction on both on/off road conditions. They are more aggressive the "P" REVOs. No one here has yet gotten them. Any of those real aggressive looking tire will make tons of noise on pavement and will not provide good traction in snow/rain.

Actually you are wrong KOZ. All M/T tires are not created equal. I have friennds with new MTR's and BFG M/T and they are all new, so no uneven wear yet or any slipped belts to off set noise levels. Some tires are out of round straight from the manufactures and some are so uniform that the process for making them even calls for X-raying the tire to check these things. They make alot more noise then the Toyo M/T's at least 50% more for the MTR and almost 2X for the BFG.

As for going for a E rated tire from a P rated one, its a big step and the drive will be alot more harsh maybe this is why people have not jumped on the E wagon yet.

I am second to Toyo M/T. I had them on my other truck. They looks agressive. One bad thing that they are very heavy due to more "knobs" which will reduce gas mileage greatly.
 
Tell me about it I belive the 265/75/16 wieght like 58lbs a pop compaired to my old BFG A/T which were a D rated were like 43lbs. I believe I lost about 8to 12% gas milage. But they do rock and roud noise is very minamal I only start to notice a bit of a hummm at about 85km.

Are you saying that there is a quiet M/T tire, on pavement? Are you saying that there is an M/T tire that is also as good as a REVO in the snow and rain? That all I'm saying. If someone is just looking for an aggressive LOOKING tire and doesn't care about the on road characteristics, by all means go with a M/T tire. I have the REVO LTs on my Taco and can tell you they are the best all-round tire I've ever had. I would put them up against ANY A/T tire (on/off road) on the market. Looks are one thing, performance is another. I can't wait to get them on my 4Runner!

IMO the best all around on road tires are BFG A/T KO.

I have a set (4) of Procomp A/T 35" 17 if anyone interested. Cheap $400. %95 tread. I should place this in sale location.
