Aiming Headlights on 4th Gen 4runner

I checked my car before, which the horizontal is level. I am just worrying about the vertical, because I have JDM highlight. And I am confused about the shadow area pattern... what is the suppose to be....?

You want to get the widest even pattern with no gap in the middle.

Do you need to remove the cover after unlock to access adjusting bolt B when adjusting horizontal direction? I tried to remove the cover but it doesn't seem to let me do that. Am I missing something?

I've got JDM replicas from Burtman and the pattern needed a lot of fiddling (apparently set for driving on the opposite side of the road). Those adjusting bolts are hard on your fingers, but keep working them.

Is this the correct driving position for the "Adjustment bolt B"?
I'm getting vibration on my low beams whenever I hit bumps on the road, and I don't know if it's being caused by this.

Yes. There are 2 bolts for adjusting -- the lower bolt (A) is the vertical adjustment, the upper bolt (B) is the horizontal adjustment. See this diagram:

I have the 2007 shop manual and it only shows an adjustment for vertical. Was there a change that now has no horizontal adjustment?

Vertical Adjustment screw only. Full adjustment procedure with diagrams in the FSM:

Prep requires:

LIGHTING: HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY: ADJUSTMENT

PREPARE VEHICLE FOR HEADLIGHT AIMING ADJUSTMENT

(a) Prepare the vehicle according to the following conditions:

Ensure that there is no damage or deformation to the body around the headlights.
Fill the fuel tank.
Make sure that the oil is filled to the specified level.
Make sure that the coolant is filled to the specified level.
Inflate the tires to the appropriate pressure.
Place the spare tire, tools, and jack in their original positions.
Unload the trunk.
Sit a person of average weight (68 kg, 150 lb) in the driver's seat.

This is what I want to know also. I got the plastic handle to turn 1/8th of a turn... but then what??

Right now my left headlight hits the center of the lane, and the right headlight lands in the emergency lane. I want to shift them both left just a little bit.

Your ? how many turns or if there's a horizontal screw ? Just installed depo blacked out & my left was to high , it takes probably twice as many turns as you think , best to try n the dark . I used my driveway & garage door , lucky for me , but ya took a few to get it done .

I looked all over the place on my rig but found no horizontal adjustment for the headlights on my 06. Lucky for me they seemed to be pointed proper in the horizontal plane and just needed vertical adjustment.

Thanks Chaz. Yeh I figured out the vertical adjustment. It's easy. But the horizontal threw me off. My passenger side light shines in the emergency lane (or off the highway if there isn't an emergency lane) and the drivers side light hits the center of the lane. I need to shift both of them to the left. Guess I'll go look under the hood again.

OK, I unlatched the cover over the horizontal adjustment bolt. But it was still in the way. In the process of removing it, I broke it. Does this plastic locking cover do anything? Is it just there to deter owners from messing with the adjustments? Or does it actually serve a purpose?

cant really speak for your 04 since i have an 06 but mine had black plastic covers on em also, took em off to adj. & never put back on, i believe they were just so the screws were not accidently turned when people have hands in there.

Mine's 05 I got 1 for vert. even on these new depo's , 8mm screw/nut , no cover ?

Ok so with the locking tab off, I cranked on that bolt that is allegedly for the horizontal adjustment, while the lights were on and pointed at the wall. As I cranked on the bolt I realized that the beam was not moving at all. That bolt behind the plastic cover does nothing.

So, either that bolt is not the horizontal adjustment bolt....or the locking plastic cover is somehow a key to this process and mine is broken. It would be nice if the instructions for adjusting the headlights on these trucks was outlined in a little more detail.
