lol that's the exact opposite of what the 4th Gens do, we try and turn them off and it turns back on. Not sure why Toyota can't just let us control that darn button..

I don't have an answer for you (haven't noticed this yet on mine). I may be "Captain Obvious" here, but in most vehicles I've owned, the re-circulate button will turn off if you turn on the window defrosters. Also, my VW Jetta manual talks about leaving the recirc button on for extended periods of time can cause fatigue and dizziness. That is because if no air is coming in from the outside, you are using up all the oxygen on long trips with the recirc air button on. I wonder if Toyota recognizes this as well and automatically turns off the recirc button after a period of time???
You have to press and hold the button for I think 3 seconds and then it will remain on.
Check your AC knob. If AC is on, it will change to recirculate automatically I think. I have often driven not realizing the ac was on, because not being an automatic temp control, the fan can be very low and it is not heard or felt.

There, you will find that it says, "When AC is turned to Max A.C., the inside recirculation button will automatically illuminate."
Whenever you turn the system off and then back on, it will recirculate again as long as the temperature knob is set to "Max A.C.". You can always make it take in outside air after turning it on Max AC by pushing the recirculate button, but it will come back on if the engine or AC is turned off.
For all other temperature settings, the default is recirc OFF and must be turned ON if so wanted.

Are you expecting this to work when the fan control is set to off?
All this button does is change from the A/C taking in outside air or just recirculating the inside air with the A/C. If you want outside air to flow through the car set the fan switch to low and voila air will flow. If the temp is set you Max A/C you wont be able to deselect this or turn off the A/C. Every car I've ever had works like this.

Are you talking to the OP? If so....
RTF-POST! His question was not about max a/c. I understand what he is asking - when fan is off, and esp driving at highway speeds, a small amount of air still comes through the vents, which can be annoying when you are comfortable with the temperature inside the car. To stop this trace air from entering the cabin, you can press the recirculate button; HOWEVER, for some reason in the 5th gen 4runner, it will only stay on for about 10 min before it turns itself back off. I have noticed the same problem, and do not know of a fix, but will try the "hold for 3 sec" method
That's exactly what's happening with my car too 4Shore...I should've been a little clearer with my original post.

I think it's like an "emergency fresh air" source in case you shat yourself in front of the the Mrs. or maybe even a new date (and you could always blame oit on the catalytic conv.)

Does anyone know how to override this function of having it automatically turn off due to cabin humidity?
I shipped my 4-runner to China and now have to deal with crazy air pollution. Usually in the US, I would mostly use the outside air, but the recirculate button actually gives fresher air (*can you believe that?). When the recirculate automatically turns off after 5 minutes, I get a blast of auto fumes in the face! It's become a problem for my wife and baby. The climate is somewhat humid but I do not have a problem with foggy windows.
Apparently, Shanghai Toyota does not sell the 4runner and the closest thing they have to it is something called the Land Cruiser Prado. Knowing that this is the first 4runner they have probably ever seen, I do not want them tinkering with my car. Any self quick override solution (official and non-official) would be appreciated!

This is what I get too, A/C and fans off, push button to allow air in and it disables itself after 5-10 minutes. I hadn't taken the manual out to look as to why, I just press the button again
It's nice to have a small amount of outside air coming in without the wind noise or A/C on.

Looked at the wiring diagram, doesn't look good. Looks like the damper servos are controlled by a single AC unit module. I was hoping to find a wire you could just cut/ground that would disable the damper, but no luck it looks like it is all one unit.
Actually, it happens both ways on my 4th gen. The other day I turned my recirc on as I was warming up in the garage and I didn't want to smell the exhaust fumes. A few minutes later I noticed the recirc had turned off when I caught a whiff of some fumes coming from a bus in front of me.
Other times, I've turned it off and it just comes back on by itself. I ne ver really understood how or why it does what it does.
