Air compressor sound

Hello folks,

I'm sure you get lots of new members, like me, who join looking for help with a problem. This one has me stumped and the service manager at the dealer as well.

We have a 2010 4Runner SR5 4x4 with the V6 engine. Yesterday morning my wife went into the garage and heard what sounded like a small air compressor. She came and got me and yes, that's exactly what it sounded like to me. It was coming from the rear driver's side of the vehicle.

I've researched online as much as I can but haven't found a potential cause.

I'll also add that the vehicle was off at the time and had been sitting since the day before.

Any help into this odd problem would be greatly appreciated.

There is mention of a noise hours after you turn off the 4R, however I believe it was something like 5 or 6 hours. You say the next morning, what time did you put it away for the night, how many hours past?

The manual does make note of this, there has been a few threads on the forum about it as well.
 
@Westwind The vehicle sat in the garage from about 9pm until the next morning at 8am. so... about 11 hours.

I appreciate the quick replies. I did look through the manual, but it was for suspension related and tire pressure issues. The fuel system never occured to me.

Thanks again. I'll be back soon to search for info about and advice on running boards/side step. This thing sits a bit higher than our old Jeep.

Anyway... Thank you again.

It's definitely the fuel vapor system. The manual mentions it may occur 5 to 6 hours after driving, however I think other factors play into when it may occur (temperature, humidity, time since last fuel fill-up, etc.). I'm not an expert on it by any means, but I guarantee that's what you are hearing and it's definitely normal.

Since it was 90+ degrees in the shade, and the wife was sitting in the passenger seat, I attempted to fill mine up one day with the engine running. As soon as I removed the gas cap, I heard a loud electric motor sound coming from the fuel filler neck. I figured it was just the fuel pump, but it sure was surprisingly loud.
 
I have it too, Yesterday was the first time I heard it so I ran to the computer and did a search, which in turn lead me to this thread.
 
Yeah, it can be annoying when you are sleeping in the back. It doesn't happen every time that I have noticed, though. Really freaked me out the first time.

Once the vehicle is turned off does it automatically come on and stay on....or does the system turn on and off as the vehicle deems it necessary?

So, this probably wasn't running all 12 hours since the vehicle was in the garage, is that correct?

What triggers it specifically isn't known. It's part of the emissions control system, it's controlled by an on board computer, and it's a normal function. I seriously doubt it was doing it for more than a few minutes, you just happened to catch it. My PT Cruiser does the same thing.
 
air bag-compressor noise

When I start my 05 FR up I hear the airbag compressor, sounds like a refridgerator kinda noise, is this normal, can I make it quieter or maintain it in anyway??
Before buying this 4runner, i test drove others but never heard this noise before??
Anybody hearing this also? HELP!

I have the same noise on my 01 runner. The passenger side keeps clinking on and off on and off very annoying. Is there a way to reset the air bag? Please help.:noidea:
 
From page 24 in the owners manual:

Noise from under vehicle after turning off the engine

Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction.
