Air Compressor

I figured I'd ask the experts on this...

Can anyone recommend a decent air compressor/tire inflator?

I am not really looking for built in/on board air. I would just like a good portable one for the cigarette lighter. I have an Amazon gift card burning a hole in my pocket.

The cheap cigarette lighter ones are generally horrible, but are better than nothing in an emergency. Stepping up to a direct battery-clip compressor is a huge upgrade in capability.

Can't comment on the quality since I literally just ordered it... but the Viair 400P is $134 on Amazon... gets good reviews... seems solid.

oh good, im glad there is someone else on here that uses/likes that compressor. I feel like a broken record sometimes, haha.

they do sell a 2780, which is also a great compressor, its half the output, but at half the cost.

yeah, the stock chuck is kind of a PITA, though it does work VERY well. I swapped mine out for a euro style chuck. much better.

I posted about the crazy deals on Amazon. I don't know what that was all about but the price has jumped back up. Looks like Amazon sold off what they had left and now it's just available through other sellers.

So far I swapped out the chuck on the 400P I bought with one that goes straight on. Much better as the combo chuck/deflator wouldn't fit well on my valve stems and took up more room trying to pack away.

I looked seriously at the MasterFlow when I was searching. I guess there were some crazy deals to be had on those several months back as several stores discontinued them or something. However, they CAN be a really good pump with some mods. It looks like the reed valves inside the head are spot-welded and tend to rust then pop off with age. Also, the wire is under sized so it will get hot as well as the wiring to the relay. I don't want to buy a cheap compressor only to have to spend $40 in replacement parts and a bunch of work to make it usable.

Viair or TJM portables are good deals for the price..you will regret a cig lighter portable...

I use a viair 450. It's a little slower than the 400 but has a better duty cycle so it's less prone to overheating. After using a cheap cigarette lighter one that overheated all the time, I wanted to make sure that I didn't end up with the same issue.
