Okay so I'm due for an air filter change. What is good and what isn't for the truck? Is the K&N air filter worth double the price? If so what are the differences between any old regular filter? I'm not trying to buy a $60 "performance" air filter for a daily driver that I take off road occasionally. Thanks for the input!

I would never use the K*N that use oil. Easy to foul the maf sensor.

I get Toyota OEM filters from Amazon for about $18 delivered right to my door. Quality, convenient, and reasonably priced.

Just get anything thats designed for your 4runner and you can get easily.
K&N isn't worth it at all. It's only good for honda boys who like talking big about their sub 100hp engine, and think that a red drop in filter really does give them the advertised 15hp. Not to mention, you'll just foul up your MAF sensor, and have less filtration(which is bad if you're in dusty environments) as it's designed to let the engine breathe a bit better/easier.
I personally just get a fram filter as it's easy to get at Walmart. And it's only $12.

I use the AEM dryfilter. It doesnt require oil and is reusable so you can just wash it out every couple months. Just make sure you arent going anywhere for about 24 hours so the filter dries before putting it back in

I saw the OEM filter was of similar construction to the AFE Pro Dry S so I figured go with that since it is washable and reusable.

Been using my KN drop in for over 2yrs 40,000mi no problems at all. I bring a normal paper filter with me when I wheel. But the key is not over oiling the filter element. I clean and re oil my drop in at every oil change 5000miles and still not fouled out maf.
Probably the longest $40 I've spent on the rig so far beside the kn cleaning kit...another $20.

I'm running the AFE Pro Dry in my 4R and K&N in my wife's truck. Anyone fouling sensors doesn't know how to properly oil their filters. Either is fine, I just went with the AFE because it doesn't require oil, one less thing to buy. Installed at 300 miles, 16 months later I'm at 11,000 miles and haven't had to clean it yet. I do still have the OEM filter which I will use for a 24-48 hour period after washing the AFE filter that way it has plenty of time to dry.

The cloth 'drop in' filters wont become worthless if you get water on it when splashing through a wet trail miles from home.
They are just more durable, but they do let in more dirt. But not driving so close behind people on dirt roads also lets in less dirt.
Just get the AC Delco one on Amazon.

I've got the K&N filter in mine. I've had it for years, with over 30K miles on it. and I live on a dirt road, though only 500 feet or so, it is an every day drive.
I got the K&N cause I didn't know about the AFE, but I haven't had any problems with it. I just make sure to apply the oil very lightly. If you are putting so much oil on the filter that it is getting all the way through to your MAF sensor, then you done messed up bad!
Not sure if there is any performance or MPG benefit. But I clean it every 6 months with my oil change, or some times sooner if going on a long trip. If I where to pay 15 bucks for a new filter every time, I'd be 90 dollars in after only 3 years. So there can easily be a cost savings.

+1...OEM from Amazon. Put it on your 'wish list' and catch it during a price drop. I've bought a couple that way, even if I didn't need it at the time.
