Air filter question

I searched this first but found little to nothing -

What if any advantage is a standard K & N replacement air filter over the OEM paper versions?

I couldn't think of an answer to this very question so thats why I bought an OEM filter to replace my old one, less than $20 on ebay shipped. I ran an aftermarket intake/filter on my last truck and while it sounded nice I dont think it did anything.

K&N is washable and resuable for a good 100K miles or more.
OEM is replaceable every 10K miles??

So do the math, which one would you like to buy? :D

A better alternative for you would be a AFE pro dry s filter and take out the secondary charcoal filter.

You said secondary charcoal filter, where is the primary one?

I was thinking about Stage 2 pro dry intake too but have concerns.
Looking at the pictures from this thread:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/perfo...perchargers-more/53937-trd-cai-installed.html

The charcoal filter has to be removed. I do not know how you guys but since I took my charcoal filter that was right after regular air filter on my V6, I keep resetting engine check light with VSC TRACK light every 48 hours. The codes are PO456, 455,441.
My other concern is that from the pictures its look like TRD intake takes air from the same spot as the stock intake. So what’s the difference?
More details would be very helpful!
Thanks

its every 30k for $20, so for $400 I can get 20 filters good for 600K, that is the math. :D:D

Thats a first gen TRD intake or the AFE stage 2 intake that are still being made. They don't make the 1st gen TRD intake anymore. Thats weird about your codes, I did that about 1 or 2 months before I got my intake and never threw any codes. The difference between the factory intake and a TRD/AFE, K&N, etc is the travel to the throttle body. The 1st air filter will be in the box that unsnaps from the bigger part of the intake that hooks up to the throttle body.

haha... The K & N is like between $25-55 pending where you buy it from. And if you wash it every time you wash your car, then it'll last forever. Plus, it adds at least 1hp and 2lbs. of torque. :driving:

Think about what you just wrote. You spent $20 on an OEM filter.

At that price, you could have bought a K&N filter and with a recharge kit, it'll pay for itself in no time.

Toyota built my engine, not K&N so Id like to think that they did a decent job designing an air filter for it. The reliability and longevity of these vehicles seems quite independent of aftermarket air filters so Im not worried there either. Horsepower increases are likely only to be seen at higher rpms where airflow can make a big difference; my truck rarely sees over 3k rpm so again, whats the point. I also have no real interest in cleaning and re-oiling a filter...played that little game with my dirtbike and no more. AFE and TRD full intake kits are pretty nice and I cant say I wouldn't like one; Id just rather spend the money on a bona fide tangible improvement like a bumper or beefier skid plates.

Do not use a KN oiled filter on your 4runner. The oil can contaminate the mass air sensor. This usually happens after it is cleaned and reoiled because the oil gets put on to heavy. I had this happen on my old Ford Thunderbird and I never could get the mass air sensor cleaned just right after that. Now on my Jeep Wrangler that does not use mass air my KN works great. Use oem or a dry type filter only.

Well, I looked at TRD site at their performance filter - looks/works suspiciously like a K&N??? Anyway, I think I will stick with a dry unit. I will probably go with Napa Gold or Toyota. Thanks gents- :hunter:

What do you mean by dry filter? Are you saying an OEM filter (dry... non-washable) versus a K&N washable filter?

Why so?

No not OEM. Technology
You get the flow of the K&N or other performance style filter but you don't have to worry about your sensors. There are others like a foam filter like a greddy or HKS which I'm also running on my truck but their expensive. K&N is great I used there filters before without problems but there are better filters out there, although I'm not gonna lie I'm getting me one of the K&N carbon fiber filters as soon I can.

The re-oiling isn't consistent. If you re-oil and use to much you have the chance of the oil getting in your intake system and MAF, not really worth it IMO.
