I see on the forum that people go back and forth about CAI and i just don't think it is worth the money buy do you think a k&N drop in filter is worth the money then a stock. is the performance better?

I've always been hesitant to use the drop-in K&N's in place of the stock filter because I don't feel like they filter as well. I had a drop-in in my old Toyota 4x4 Pickup and noticed a little more throttle response, but nothing major.

I'd either do CAI or stick with a stock filter.
 
I agree.

I recently installed a CAI and noticed a 2 mpg gain on my hwy mileage. I've had drop-in filters in my past cars, and the gains aren't as significant and can be achieved by changing your driving style.
 
I've always gone back and forth on the CAI's and decided to do it on a couple of my past cars for the "Sound", not to gain more mpg's or hp.
 
I was just at the dealership recently and spoke to one of the tech's about "upgrading" to CAI. He asked straight out "Why?"

That told me enough. I really don't want the extra noise and as far as performance, I don't know anyone that has installed a CAI on their vehicle that can actually demonstrate better performance or mpg.
 
It really depends on what your after. the stock tuning won't give you any increase in power. I have a K&N air filter and love it just don't over oil it and service it. I worked on some diesel trucks that had the K&N and other filters but they forget to service it so it clogs up with stuff and the engine doesn't run right. if you want more power get a URD MAF sensor and that'll really livin up the engine.
 
I haven't seen a CAI give any benefits to any modern car. Waste of money, IMO. If you want to sound faster then go ahead and get one.

I've seen the mileage on my 4runner go up and down 5mpg between fill ups without changing anything.
 
I have the TRD Performance drop-in air filter. I also removed my carbon filter. I maybe gained a whole 1 maybe 2 horsepower. I noticed that my 4R breathes easier (1500 rpms) at start up vs (2000 rpms) with stock filter. I also noticed that i have a little deep throaty sound vs stock choked sound. And i probably don't have to buy another filter for maybe 100K+ miles since the TRD Performance air filter is washable and reusable.
 
Not to thread jack, but would taking out the Hydrocarbon Filter void any warranty? I am just worried about Toyota deciding that my removing the filter caused some problem that I know it didn't.

Most of us took it out without probs yet made the engine breathe easier. I doubt if Toyota will blame that hydrocarbon sack filter to cause some problem. If they do find out that it's not there anymore, then just play dumb that you didn't know anything 'bout it. LOL Maybe they'll blame their mechanics who touched your 4R last. hehehe...
