Air Injection Pump....

A little while back I was checking out my 4Runner's engine bay, and found all of this junk mounted, and wrapped around my engine, and was curious what it was. After some internet searching, I found that it was an Air Injection Pump.

Starting with the 2013 MY 4Runner, Toyota decided it was time to Junk Up the 4Runner’s engine bay with this monstrosity of a contraption, like it has been doing for a few years now on the 4th Gen’s V8s and Tundras.

For those unfamiliar with this system, here is a decent explanation of what it does, and the problems it has.

Here is what really bothers me about this AIP system

1. Reliability - The Pump ($600) and Valve Set ($150 x2) are failure prone, and not exactly cheap to replace. Toyota believes that the most frequent cause of the failure is if the AIP takes in moisture. This is why you hear that annoying electric fan noise for about 1 sec after your turn off your 4nr. When you turn off your 4NR, the AIP runs in reverse for about 1 sec to remove moisture from the pump. Even if this new design feature helps with longevity, the AIP system is just another set of things to go wrong, and at this point, we don’t really know how this new and “improved” AIP system will last in the 2013 4NRs. Oh, and if either the Pump or the Valve Sets fail, your 4NR will go into limp mode…

2. Junk – This Air Injection System has a bunch of parts, wires, and hoses that run all over the place, that waste engine bay space, for say a 2nd battery, and will no doubt cause obstacles when doing service on parts of the engine.

Here is a diagram of the whole Air Injection System:

Here is a pic of my engine bay, that shows part of the system:

And then there is the AIP, which takes up a perfectly good place for a 2nd battery:

3. Placement – This system was clearly an afterthought, as Toyota put the Valve Sets in a very inconvenient place. They basically mounted them on each of the valve covers, blocking access to the middle Igniters/Spark Plugs:

Driver Side Valve Set, blocking the Igniter/Spark Plug (See Red Arrow):

Passenger Side Valve Set, completely obstructs access to the Middle Spark Plug (Arrow) and it’s hose blocks access to the Front Igniter/Spark Plug:

Luckily our Spark Plug Intervals are 100k miles. I imagine that those valve sets will need to be removed, and all of the gaskets replaced when it is time to change the spark Plugs, taking a simple maintenance procedure, and turning it into a PITA.

So, thank you CARB for not only limiting what engine choices we get on our vehicles, but forcing Manufactures to throw a bunch of unreliable junk on our vehicles, and forcing us to pay for it, not only at initial purchase, but its replacement down the road.

Damn! Glad I got a '12. If the system broke, would I affect much other than causing a Check engine light? I feel like people could just let that be broken as their cars got older

me 2. I`ve had that sh1t on my old lincoln towncar, pre obd2 1988 by the time it died in1999 aip was replaced 3 times.

PITA for Tundra's.

I have letter that extends the my warranty but some owners had to pay for their repairs before Toyota cried uncle and caved in.

I'm in the same boat with the '13 and this. Either way, thanks for sheding a little more light on the entire system, didn't realize there was so much more besides the obvious lost 2nd battery slot.

Will be interesting to see how this thing holds up over time.

They place that Pump so when the car is cold it brings up to normal temperature. There is a talk on the 4th gen sub forum how to trick the system and remove it. As soon as I understand it, I'll explain it to my mechanic and he will try to remove it.

That was my next question, makes sense! Some of the regulations there are hysterical.

So, the '12 passes without it. Or do they have another standard for '13?

I don't live there but from how I understand it from my friends that do live there, you cannot simply compare to what emission control devices older models have (or do not have) regardless of if it's literally the same exact vehicle and engine. You need to have every single damn piece of emissions control devices that the vehicle came with for your model year and if you don't the smog inspectors make you bring it back to compliance by comparing it against what it's suppose to come with for your exact model year. Something small like this may or may not go unnoticed though, but never underestimate them. After all, we're talking about a state that has roadside emissions check points :)

It's programmed into the ECM and if it's missing or not working will throw DTC emissions codes and lights. These will also show up when they plug into the OBDII port to do the emissions test and will most likely fail no matter what state you live in that has emissions testing, not just CA. I wouldn't hold your breath til somebody comes up with a SIM to fool it!

These are on all 2013's in the states but probably driven by the CA treehuggers and not sure if 2013 Canadian versions have it.2013's are certified as a Green ULEV II emissions rather then the LEV II like the 10's thru 12's. I feel guilty......................not! Eat a cow, as they give off more emissions then these Rube Goldberg contraptions.

On most air systems if the PCM does not receive the correct O2 sensor voltage change when the air pump is energized the PCM will throw a code.

It is not impossible to come up with a countermeasure to fool the PCM but just not worth the trouble.

It may be possible to replace an 13 PCM With a 12.

I would not worry about it until it fails.

What's PCM , pretty sure you mean ECM (Engine Control Module) .
Here's the pdf describing what Rube came up with ,This is for the 13' FJ but exact same as 13'4Runner ....

I live in Cali never seen one of these or heard of it before so its not a very common thing, and im sure they are just targeting the ricer crowd cause those guys just remove all the emissions parts off their cars. Notice how the article starts with a guy in a gold Honda.
