Air Oil Separator

I really want to do this; but, I have 2 questions first.

Q1: I calculated that by your example you are generating about 1/4 ounce of oil per 1,000 miles. Now I get about 18 miles per gallon. In 1,000 miles I use about 55 gallons of gasoline. 1 gallon = 128 ounces. In 1,000 miles I use (128 X 55) = 7,040 ounces of gasoline. The 1/4 ounce of oil would be mixed in with the 7,040 ounces of gasoline. So, you are saying that 0.25 ounces of oil per 7,040 ounces of gasoline is too much oil for the engine?

Q2: I have driven 34,000 miles on my 2013 4Runner in 13 months. I plan to keep this vehicle for at least 10 years. So, in 10 years, I'll probably drive 300,000+ miles. I can buy a 3M 3-step intake cleaner kit for $33 and the Moroso kit is about $145. So, you are saying that using this air & oil separator will do away with having to clean the intake system every 100K miles?

Hey I like maths too. According to your numbers that equates to about 35ppm (Parts Per Million)!
 
If you plan to keep your truck for a long time it is just a little bit of an insurance policy for a healthier engine down the road.

x2, I agree... Been running a similar system on my Jeep CRD (turbo diesel) and the MAP sensor in my intake manifold is clean and dry after 50K miles--when I bought it at 48K miles it looked like it had been dipped in tar.

I think this is a highly useful (and easy) mod for anyone interested in vehicle longevity.

My truck just ticked 70K miles and today I did an oil change. I also drained the catch can and...

I installed this same AOS on my brother in laws 2018 SR5 and the amount of oil collected in the catch can was about 2 ounces of blow by at 6,000 miles. As reliable as these motors are, I was surprised with the amount of oil misting through the PCV system. I will definitely be installing one on my 2017.

It's not just blow by. The crankcase also has some oil being aerated by the crank. There is a fresh air source built into the system so air is constantly carrying that oil and water into the intake even when there is 0 blow-by getting past the rings.

Correct. I'm just glad this oil is not being recirculated into the intake manifold.

This topic is covered to death on direct-injection forums, and even there it's a wash in terms of any cost/benefit.

For port injection, fresh gas is being sprayed anywhere this minute amount of oil/gunk is, and in WAY higher quantities, all the time. Thus, simply use top-tier gas, and the detergents/cleaners will keep your engine nearly spotless.

The idea of why this hardware would help so much is pretty laughable. Toyota truck engines lead the industry in longevity, without such a device. The million mile Tundra didn't have one either.

And yet the OCD owners of these catch-cans lose sleep over a few ounces of a natural lubricant which may actually not be bad to get in tiny quantities on internal surfaces anyway, and then rest really well once they've installed it, and then go guiltlessly polish off a few pieces of bacon, the oils of which might scare Blackstone Labs and beg the question whether one should install a catchcan in front of your mouth for better results :D

Nothing wrong with being a car geek and doing a mod like this but I'm a bit baffled myself as to why.

Are these not multi-port fuel injected motors? I could see the intakes getting a coating somewhat over time perhaps but actual problems developing with heads/valves, etc. like in the DI motors (that are becoming so popular these days with eventual clogged intake and fouled valve issues) I cannot see.

Thanks for adding your thoughts on this 1996 because it had me concerned initially when I saw catch cans being put in these vehicles.

I agree it's overkill and not something that'll be done to my wagon but nothing wrong with doing it on the other hand. Those Moroso setups some guys are using look classy.

It's very comforting to know there's people out there more OCD than me because it's a damn crutch. ;)
 
110,000 miles later and still going strong. Did an oil change this weekend because what else is there to do when you're cooped up at home. Drained a 'few ounces of natural lubricant' out of the catch can so it prompted me to update the post. I rather know this isn't going anywhere. Laugh away... now back to relabeling my canned goods shelves with my Dymo label maker.
