Airaid Modular Intake Tube - 510-934

I just received this piece and sent it back the same day. I wanted to make everyone aware that our t/b inlet is 2.75" and this piece narrows down to 2.25" where it meets the t/b...thats what i consider a performance downgrade. No worries as i bought the parts to build my own 3" intake pipe, but i just wanted to save anyone considering this in the future from learning what i did the hard way.

It narrows down because the throttle body is that size...

Yes maybe in the middle where the actual butterfly valve is, but i can say from numerous sports cars ive owned that a bigger intake tube(within reason) will generally increase power, even taking into consideration the smallest point of the t/b may be 2.25".

interesting, i own one and havent had any issues with it. it fits on nice too.
i guess ill check it when i do another throttle body cleaning.

Why not just take it off completely and have an infinite area?

third gens have MAF sensors... the intake size needs to be the same as factory or you will need to have it calibrated (tuned, and I don't know if that's available for these). If not I can tell you it will likely run lean.

Mikebontoft has the idea. Change the inner diameter of that tube too much and you will run lean or rich (depending on how you change it) if you don't rescale the MAF. If you've ever had a vehicle with forced induction (although it applies to any vehicle really) this is something you learn through research, or the hard way:banana:

oh so you mean that a MAF, a mass air flow sensor, calculates a given mdot?

If thats the case then I guess since mdot is conserved, then the necking down of the TB must increase the velocity of air in the tube. That would make sense ...

in this case unless you're running forced induction the larger diameter will hinder your performance, remember this isn't a sports car but a truck

ROFL at the op for thinking Airaid would sell a non engineered/working part to him for $100+ without knowing about the sizing and not thinking it would work correctly. Should have just sold it on here, plenty of people looking to change out OEM tube cause of the silencer and accordion tube and who would care-a-less if the tube decreased in size.

Besides, if the tube maintained the large size, the coupler would have reduced the size one you connected to the TB, amiright?

Not trying to sound like a d*** but this thread seems kinda silly.

Just because a company sells something doesnt mean that it is "properly engineered". Ive installed parts from reputable companies up to and including headers, exhausts, and entire "properly engineered" turbo kits that didnt fit without some sort of modification even though they were sold as 100% bolt-on.

You are correct that the coupler reduces to 2.75", but not 2.25". If a larger tube made no difference toyota would have put a 2.25" t/b with no taper what so ever. Velocity comes into play. There is also something to be said about loosing low end tq by going too large, but a 3" pipe isnt going to have that effect.

OP, what exactly are you trying to say? Does the intake tube fit over the throttle body or is there a coupler there that is 2.25" on one side and 2.75" on the throttle body side?

The AirRaid tube is the exact same size at the throttle body, then a silicone coupling slips over to conjoin the tube and TB

Airaid

The size difference is meniscule.
A naturally aspirated engine like the 3.4L would not realize any effect(s) by way of power loss and/or decrease of flow from that difference in measurement.
I would try it but I already modified my stock intake...

We are still talking about a stock 4runner, not a 800hp rock crawler motor. Non of this really has any significance, even the claimed gains from the tube itself let alone the things you are nit-picking about. I would have kept it.
