airbag light on/off

I have a 08 Sports Ed V6. Until recently, I noticed my airbag light would be on or off at various time. (the light next to the clock/temp LED) Is it suppose to be on or off depending if the passenger has the seatbelt fastened? Last night driving by myself, I noticed nothing was on but I fastened the seatbelt clamp on the passenger side and noticed the airbag light "off" lighted. Is my airbag "on/off" light not properly working? Not sure if my LED has anything to do with it, but I also noticed half (right side closer to the airbag light) of my clock/temp LED rather dim at night...

I always thought it turned on/off depending if there was a person there by reading the weight on the seat.

I just tested the same thing while I was taking a cruise, and with no weight in the passenger seat and the belt clipped the light for "airbag off" came on. I can think of a few reasons, but arent logical

I have never put the seatbelt on with no one sitting in the passenger seat, but I do occasionally put my laptop in the passenger seat and the blinking airbag light can get quite annoying, especially at night.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I believe you're correct, SPENK05, since I noticed last night the "airbag on" came on when my wife sits on the passenger seat with the seat belt clipped. So I guess the airbag light's only function is for the passenger and has nothing to do with the driver... like you said isn't logical to me either. I'll have to monitor it again because I thought I've seen it off and on with someone sitting on the passenger seat.
