Aisin Locking Hubs

I recently picked up a pair of Aisin Locking hubs. One was pretty dirty, it had a brownish grease like it was submerged in water. The other was pretty clean. I'm in the process of rebuilding them. I've only been able to disassemble the dials, at the moment. Before I tackle the hub gear, I noticed the dirty one spins pretty easily, while the cleaner one is a little harder to turn, but does turn.

My question is how free should the hub gear turn? I'm assuming this is the part that will connect to the Axle and the rest of the hub will be turning around it while it's in the FREE position.

Spinners

I just cleaned and installed a set I got on EBAY and they were semi crapped up.

Take the snap ring off and clean both parts. The inside of that gear has a bronze insert that has holes in it to hold lube. There is probably some dried up smutz (Technical term) that is keeping it from moving smoothly.

You'll want to get that out of there so that you can properly grease them.

Snap ring pliers are your friend here.

I have not gotten that far yet, been too busy with Thanksgiving. I've also ordered new gaskets and o-rings.

What kind of grease do you guys recomend? I keep reading Lithium grease is often used. I really don't want to use the Disc Brake grease I used for the axles.

As for the snap ring pliers, they are practically useless for the dial ring clip. I just used two small flathead screw drivers.

I just use regular moly grease, it has worked for me so far.

Any good wheel bearing grease should do.

I also took them apart with two screwdrivers as my pliers were not with me but I'm still sure it'd be easier with them as long as the tips are not buggered up.
