Ajohnson85's '87 build

Congrats Andy! I was just going to post this picture. I open up my subscription to 4wd Toyota Owner and what do I see? ol glamour shot! Looking good man

Bobby

Thanks Bobby!

The '87 is just about ready to fire up now, just need to change the oil filter and fill it up. New denso plugs and TPS sensor (I robbed this one for the red '85) are in, new throttle body gasket, and I replaced the cylinder head ground that was very poorly installed.

The 31m battery was a PITA to fit on the driver's side. I moved the coolant reservoir in place of the w.w. reservoir. I don't recommend this battery in this spot and will get a smaller battery when this one dies.

I hope I can get some help here. I am trying to turn the engine over now. The charge light is on but there is no other power. I have a GM 12si alternator with the 2 wire pigtail spliced into the yellow and white wires, with the toyota red wire unused, just like it was in my '85. The ground wire to the engine block in that alternator harness was frayed badly so I cut it off and grounded it to the body on a clean surface. I ran 4 guage wire from the alternator to the stock underhood fuse block in place of the stock 8 guage, hooked to the 80 amp fuse. I am not sure what to check.

Well I got it to crank. Apparently the stock alternator-fuse block wire is linked some where and so I wasn't getting power. Now I have the single flash check engine light, so I'll start with the TPS tomorrow.

Looking great. You going to have it ready for Uwharrie in a a few weeks?

Yea if I can get it to run lol. I hope it is the new TPS out of adjustment, or the AFM wiring. I didn't really mess with anything else. The charge and ebrake lights were still on, too.

Still not starting. The check engine light single flashes, and the charge and brake lights are on. Having trouble figuring out what to check

Power at engine bay fuse block?

I didn't have much time to mess with it today. I reconnected the 80 amp side of the alternator wire but left the other side off with the 4 gauge hooked up. I now have lights, ignition, clutch start cancel, it cranks but won't start. I am going to check the AFM and fuel pump tomorrow.

Obviously I finally got the engine started. Let's just say it took me way too long to find my dumba** mistake :nono:. Before I parked it, cold starts were rough. It now starts up and runs great, just need to check timing. I redid every ground except the EFI ground at the intake manifold because it is nearly impossible to reach, but I did unbolt it and clean the surfaces. 0 gauge from battery to frame, battery to block, and block to frame, 8 gauge from cylinder head to firewall, and 4 gauge from intake manifold to inner fender.

Unfortunately, I have an oil leak from the oil pump O ring, NBD I can pull it off and see what happened. However, I am really happy to see that the timing cover and oil pan are not leaking :thumb:

Is that with no muffler? It sounds awesome!!!!

Haha, yea just the DT header. It's loud as hell with a little throttle. I have a magnaflow to put on, not sure if I'm gonna run this new cat, I might have a test tube made if I need it for state inspection.

I feel your pain...gotta do the same o-ring on my pile of dents.

That was a new one that I installed . Shit happens. It took me an hour to replace, it's really not that hard.

I still need to bleed my steering and front brakes, if all goes well I may have some pics of this thing in the front yard later this week.
