So, I joined the site a few years ago, when I was finishing up high school, and knew next to nothing about cars - I had just got my driving permit!

So one of my only mods included 8000K Headlights (Which I removed soon after as I grew out of the rice look so very quickly) - and instead of posting random questions, I lurked around for the next three years whenever I could to gather as much information as I could on my truck, and possible mods and upgrades I could do.

(Shout out to gaterose, your truck is my dream truck! Every time I show someone my final goal for my truck, its an image of yours!)

So we bought the 2004 Toyota 4runner Limited (Silver) in 2006, it had 70000KM on it at this point - the next 9 years, we drove an extra 80000 or so on it, and it's totaling a bit above 150K right now.

I've finally inherited it as my university gift, and I am now free to do whatever I want! (Well, until I get married! TILL THEN, ALL THE MODS!)

So, she's in pretty good condition. The only noticeable thing is the frame rust. Maintenance wise shes been neglected quite a bit. The only things that were ever done were oil, and brakes when they were absolutely worn. It wasn't driven much, majority of the years its gathered were sitting in the garage.

So, the past month or so it's been mostly restoration of the truck. Compounding the exterior, some clay bar, and restored the paint as best I could (it made a huge difference!)

That, pretty much, sums up where it stands right now. Mod wise, next to nothing. LED interior and HID headlights (5000K for now, still barely ever driven at night time) and LED under dash lights. Planned for the next 200-250 days or so depending on budget after all the restoration and repairs:

1) OBDII CarPC in progress. I officially started this project a week or so ago, and have purchased all the parts to start beta testing and coding for my Raspberry Pi oriented CarPC with a custom coded voice based system, and just a general UI optimized for the 4th gen (and maybe later 5th as well, if I upgrade/there is interest in it) - Depending on how the project goes, I'll beta test with anyone else here interested helping in field testing other than just me!

2) Pioneer 4100NEX. This is the screen I'd use to connect my Pi, and just in general replace my stock stereo which is way too outdated for the kind of things I want to do with it (projected install: 2 weeks, 2 months for backup camera)


Now, finally, thank you all for the help you will be giving me, and the advice you have already given. Just in advanced I'm sorry if anything I said sounded silly or needs work, but I'm still learning and I'd appreciate the /teaching/ attitude when helping me out with things.

So, I hope this build thread grows from here, as I fulfill the dreams for my favourite car ever since we first bought it when I was a child!

Black Out!

So I blacked out the headights, (kept the amber reflectors as my theme is orange/silver)

Plastidip'd the front grill and bumper segment, a nice improvement from stock. Next up are some marker lights drilled into the grill as another member here did!

Painted my wheels with VHT Engine Metallic! Its a phenominal paint, holds up well and gives it a really nice finish. (No clear coat ontop)

Finally, a single coat of VHT nightshades on rear tails to make them stand out a bit more with the black/silver look, since the pinkish was really growing old. Next up, LED tails!

I have an extra Raspberry Pi laying around as a matter of fact. I would be interested in testing this out once you have a working build. What is the full scope of this project? How does it compare to the android app Torque? I installed an android HU in my ride and it is essentially the equivalent of having a tablet; albeit with necessary HU components like external GPS and preamp outputs. This affords me the ability to have torque running right in my dash.

Me too, I was thinking of using a Pi Zero to show engine vitals, etc...

And maybe a backup camera running on the same system?

The back up camera actually is a great idea, and probably wouldn't be too difficult to implement (although you'd have to convert it to the ribbon connector on the pi) I'd probably keep my backup camera on the stereo itself though, for simplicity (but for those of you who would just use the pi with an external screen, that would work fine)

The android and the pi would probably accomplish around the same idea, i was also thinking if it becomes rather redundant, to make the pi more of an information system to log gps coordinates (to see where you've been and how often and stuff) and OBD data averages, would be fun to see. The biggest reason I wanted to not use torque is because of how ugly it is, and I know I can probably also make an android app to accomplish the same function, but hopefully get both rolled out - I just love the idea of having a dedicated computer in the car, since I don't really own a device i can leave in the car at all times. Instead of an app like idea, the final product would hopefully be something along the lines of a truck specific OS itself, a complete linux fork for the truck, implemented for the truck, which would be rather cool to see!

I'll keep you guys posted as I begin to work on it, hopefully if I can get some basic functionality down, and then create an opensource git project so everyone can help out and make it more of a community effort. I just hope I actually motivate myself to begin!
 
Got my clearance/marker lights installed! [MENTION=121406]Mister_Seth92[/MENTION] had the original idea and I used his walkthrough, I wired mine to the seat heater fuse with a fuse tap and thus its on whenever the car is on, during the day with the DRLs and at night with the headlights

Yes I know one of my ambers for the headlight itself are out, LED replacements on the way~

Also bought all the LED pieces for an interior cluster swap, stay tuned!

Can you please clear up for me what bulb goes in that market spot? I can't ever get a clear answer lol. The one that is burnt out for other reference.

Hey, its a 194/168 bulb, you can buy LEDs to replace it (what I plan on doing)

I have small hands so I can just get in there without removing the headlights, if you remove the black plastic cover ontop of the lights itll make it easier on ya
 
HUD lights swapped to white - I would probably do these again in the future, they're a bit too yellow for my liking. Might go with cool blue instead! Easy mod if you're good with soldering - I actually learned as I did this mod.
