All 4 Calipers Seized Up

Super frustrated right now. But thought I’d vent a little here.

Did a brake job about a month and a half ago on the front of my ‘05 V8 SR5 and both calipers seized up, well, I know this truck is known for that so I just purchased some remanded ones from advanced auto parts, bled the brakes, and they seem to be working okay so far.

Well, I just tacked the rear last night and all seemed okay. I got a little bit of a burning smell when I took it for a quick spin late last night but no smoke or anything. This morning I took it for another quick drive and about three minutes in both sides started smoking and smelled burnt, without wanting to do more damage to the brand new rotors I’m now in an Uber to go pick up two more remanned calipers from Oriellys for the rear. Over all it’s cost me about $700 in parts and hours of my time.

Just letting a little frustration out. Anyone else experience this?

To me there is a bigger issue here in the brake system. If its cooking the calipers that quick there may be an issue in the master cylinder. In regards to the calipers I had multiple sets freeze within a couple years so I ended up doing the 5th gen caliper upgrade and have been extremely pleased with how these have done so far.

Well, I’m the second owner and I can guarantee that this is the first time the rear brakes have ever been changed, let alone the calipers.

To put the cherry on top, I’m now in another Uber heading to Orielly’s because the right rear caliper they gave me won’t thread to the bolt for the brake line.

I don't think he's saying that he replaced the rear calipers and then they froze up, the way I read it he just did the rear brakes using the old calipers and they seemed fine at first and then froze up on him, but I could be reading what he wrote wrong.

That sounds super annoying... I would be pissed too.

I did my fronts when I found a seized caliper but its been ok since.

Anytime I do tire pressure checks now I take an IR thermometer and measure the rotor temps on all 4 corners to see if anything stands out... before the repair I did the same thing and noticed considerably higher temps on one rotor which is why I diagnosed it in the first place (other than the truck flying to one side during breaking).

Yep, you read it right! I was using the old caliper which I’m positive was the original and just replaced pads then they froze up on me.

Very true! Just frustrated with the time spent on it. But I know I should be set for a while now!

All four of mine seized at about 100k miles on my 04 v8. Went with napa eclipse remans and no issues since.

I wanted to update that the rear Napa Eclipse reman units have began to seize at the pistons. They aren’t retracting easily and are dragging causing the one pad to wear and the rotors to heat up. I’ll be returning them this week for replacements through the warranty included with them. The one is just over a year old ( 12k miles on it) and the other is about three years old (40k miles on it). I just hope my brembo rotors aren’t warped from the overheating!

Hey John, do you have a link to any threads covering the 5th gen caliper upgrade? Trying to figure out which calipers to get and am seeing a lot of different thoughts.

Easiest think I did was just at the auto part store say it was for a 2010 4runner and I’ve had no issues so far. Anything newer than 2015 is a different design and won’t work
