All things Overlanding thread

So I had a thought today as i was out and about. I had no less than five different 4Runner drivers wave to me today. Each of these people were as different as could possibly be. It made me recognize one of the coolest parts of overlanding, owner clubs, etc.; the diversity. If you have ten vehicles on a trail and all of them stop at the summit, when the drivers exit the vehicles they are all different. Different walks of life; the hipster, the shop rat, the mountain man dude, the lawyer, the mechanic, engineer, welder, you name it. All of them joined by their common interest, pursuing a goal of exploring, achieving, working together, and enjoying the experience of that particular day. There is a lot of good in the world if we take the time to see it. Also, the Jeep guys have their special wave; I think this is the place for a 4Runner-specific wave to begin. Any ideas?

Only had 2 days there and didn't get to do half of what I wanted but I'm sure we will run into each other again.

Finally got it back. Despite my instructions they powder coated every part. Which was fine but now I have a lot of extra POR 15 paint that I just purchased for the trailer. Bought all the hardware for the suspension, tub, and fenders in stainless and it cost me $49. Ordered a OEM rim because I'm just going to mount 235/85 16's instead of dealing with the dry rotted/tubed military tires. Ordered a new parking cable and new data plates. Still have rebuild the axle and wire up the trailer. Having fun! :llama:

Agree! IMHO "campgrounds" are the antithesis of camping. But they're good for giving the tourists a place to go.

I don't disagree with the above comments. I grew up camping at state parks and thought it was great. As I got older, my father and I did hiking and back packing trips. Each one has its pros and cons.

My wife does not enjoy the outdoors like I do. Her idea of camping is the so called "glamping". I will utilize those state parks w/ cabins, electricity and running water as a means to introduce and hopefully convince her that all is ok w/ camping. Eventually, we will graduate to campground, tent camping. I do ever see her doing a remote camp, but I am hoping the kids see the value in draw to that. If not, then it'll be me an a friend.

This has been a great thread and I've learned a lot from it.

Nope, never got a first hand response from anyone that has run it end to end .
Like you said , there is a lot of info on various points of the trail though . Here is a good site for checking currant trail and pass conditions for most of Colorado . Bushducks - Jeep Trail and Backroads Trip Reports<br>Colorado Jeep Trails and Passes - Opening Dates Just a heads up , Cottonwood Pass ( it's on section 6 of the COBDR ) is closed for the year to be paved .

I'm starting to drill down on some of the sections to look for more specific information. As far as I can tell, all of the sections are passable with a truck, but I want to confirm. I once got a trail suggestion from some dirt bikers only to find out that the trail turned into single track. I'd like to avoid that happening again! lol

Thanks for the link and the info on Cottonwood Pass. It sucks the pass will be closed. I downloaded the GPS track for the detour. I had also read that Hagerman was expected to open very late this year, but thankfully that pass just opened.

Anyone have a good recommendation for some 12V flood lights to use on my roof rack for lighting up a campsite?

I have rough country 2in x5 spot lights on my 'runner and there great. Housing got dull rather quick but it dosent affect the light output. 4500lumens combined.

I have Rigid Ignites as Alley Lights on my rack but can point them further out to light up the area for the campsite.

Really like them

you can do the same with less money...if you buy cheapies from amazon( ie. light fox) 170 lumens per light, pull the lens and lightly silicone for good measure, you can get 4, for about 60 bucks.

I guess I'm an overlander. I use lifted trucks to yank offroadable travel trailers as far as they can go and still turn around, then use the travel trailer as a base camp to go 4-wheeling.

16'-19' comfortable travel trailers, not a special "offroad" trailer or a canvas side popup. Hardside or hybrid. Compacts or short hybrid are very good offroad/offgrid trailers with the comforts of home, yearround trailers. You use a lot of propane in winter, but you have storage inside for a generator and extra LP tanks.

A short rear porch is a necessity, you can't yank a trailer with a long rear porch through washouts and gullies.

Equip the truck/trailer with tools, jump pack/compressor etc, etc, and you're self-sufficient for a long time if you choose to be.
