all V8s: timing belt change job prices?

Could you guys with the V8 2 UZ-FE give me the prices you paid for timing belt replacement, first mine with Toy dealership:

1) timing belt: 400 Euro (app. 600 USD) without water pump change (it was still
fully ok and dealer said that V8 2UZ-FE water pumps are robust construction and do not need to be replaced), included in the price: oil change, check of transy fluid, seprately charged for total brake re-make: stuck front calipers and new front brake pads for 200 Euro service of back brakes (app. 260 USD) - in total a bit less than 1k USD for timing belt, regular service and total re-make of brakes

2) next please!

I paid about 700 Euro for timing belt change that included water pump and pulleys. This was done with all genuine Toyota parts. In my opinion changing the water pump is a good idea because even though the pump is robust, the seals can go. The pump is actually pretty inexpensive and adds noting to labor since it has to come off already. I think the price you paid is actually pretty fair for US pricing.

I paid about 750 Euro/$1000 for my timing belt and water pump replacement. It was at about 140,000 miles. I just assumed both were due based upon the mileage, and the tech confirmed my water pump was starting to leak when he tore everything down.

I did my own replacement, but here are the rough prices I was seeing @ Mesa, AZ Toyota Dealerships. Note that I was very frustrated with the fact that no one could give me the ACTUAL cost over the phone or even the "high estimate". Both dealerships used the word "about" approximately 15 times per phone call.

Parts and labor were "about $800" (again - directly quoted from SM, never got a real number) for the timing belt and components. The waterpump was "about $300 more, give or take". This didn't include the thermostat, which "after they looked at it and checked" was about $45. Spark plugs using OEM Denso's were $125 in case you were wondering. Total cost would have been around $1100 for just the timing belt and w/p, or roughly 823 Euro.

Agreed that the w/p is quite durable, but it makes sense to swap it out at the same time. Mine was in good shape, but had a small weep and had left some antifreeze stains on the engine block (which wiped away easily, but they were there).

just paid $845 for mine with water pump and pulleys.....
my water pump was leaking and i did not know about it
just my .02 for the extra $100 or so change the water pump while u are in there

I paid $767.91 US at my local Toyota dealer on July 9, 2014.

This included parts and labor for the following:

1. Timing belt $72.06
2. Water pump $145.93
3. Coolant $29.92

Labor was $520

The notes said the timing belt was pretty much shot at 99k miles.

The water pumps are fairly robust, kind of... sort of...

Long story short, they do leak over time (sometimes not very long at all...) Its not a bad idea to replace the water pump when you do your timing belt, its good insurance and you're already doing most of the labor to get to it. Usually by the time you need a timing belt the water pump is seeping or outright leaking on most of the 2UZ-FEs I have seen.

Personally I think its worth the peace of mind as you don't want it to start leaking, bind-up, damage the timing belt, and/or overheat the vehicle.

I had mines changed a 120K miles, mechanic told me the belt was in bad shape had crack lines all over it and the water pump had started to leak a little, said if i was to keep driving the belt could of snap anytime, lucky me hehehehe

I got the timming belt/water pump kit from RockAuto for around $200-$250 i forgot the exact price and then had my local shop mechanic install everything for $170

so I spent a little over $400 bucks for parts & Labor, which isnt bad compare to $1200 that toyota quoted me.

I take my 4runner and Tundra to Automotive Consultants on 40th st and University just south of the airport. They are cheaper and do better work than the stealerships. Check them out. (602) 437-3188.
