From what I know, HID lights are illegal in any vehicle that didn't come from the factory with them. Not 100% if that's the law in every state and in all honesty, no one cars and I don't think cops know the laws on them. HID is great for low beam but not high beam for us without modification. For us, the high beam voltage is cut and the high beam bulb is used as the DRL. Cutting voltage to the HID will fry it. If you do install HID high beams, you have to disable the DRL function. We also have plastic fog light housings. HID lights run very hot and it's possible to melt the plastic housing due to this. The LED lights are just as bright as HID in my experience but they don't project as far down the road. For a fog light, that's fine since fogs are for close range anyway. I may eventually install LED low beams but I will leave the high beams alone.

Good to know--I am old and old school so some of the mod I see here are puzzling to me! Thanks for the info.

Lot of 'tude in the responses....but there is another factor as well. We don't all see the same in low light, so what is plain to one may be tough for another. I had Cat's eyes until I had Lasik and suffered a drastic reduction in night vision thus requiring more light to ''See'' the same picture at night. Age also reduces night vision.

No attitude meant in my post. Not trying to beat the OP up. Also at age 50 my night vision is no longer what it used to be.

Good lights but XD is way over priced. If you're going to buy them, buy them on ebay or amazon for a lot less

Thanks for the pictures! Two pictures are worth two thousand words, I am sold, This is exactly what I was looking for--some sort of low flood light to the side. I also managed to locate an old thread on how to adjust aiming of the fog lights so I think I am all set.

Side-Facing Lights - Legality

I have Truck-lites with very good spread, but visibility on the side is still poor; I think partly because bright headlight beams makes us less sensitive to darker light on the sides.

I'm contemplating adding side-facing turn assist lights (It helps that I have a first-gen that's easy to modify).

1) They would use same or lower power bulbs than turn signals so as not to outshine the latter (i.e., turns use 1156 bulb, I'll use 921's).
2) They would be mounted low, i.e., on the bumper, to further prevent them from outshining turn signals, yet light up lower part of pedestrian / or object on the side into which I'll be turning.
3) It would come on only when I my turn signal for that side is on.

Any idea on laws about that? I searched but found nothing.

Xenon Depot Low/Highs

I picked up my 2018 Trail and within 5 days ordered some Xenon Depot HID lows and LEDs highs. I commute on I80 through Wyoming for work. The speed limit is 80mph and the threat of hitting livestock or elk is very real. Going 80mph out driving your headlights is a real possibility. I went with the Xenon Depots and could not be happier with them. I purchased the CANbus with the high beam kit so I can still use my DRLs and they do not flicker. Customer service was awesome and they shipped them with free two day air. Check out a couple of blog post's linked below (MTN4RNR and SwellRunner as they have good tips on sealing the headlight housing to prevent condensation in the housing and placement of the drivers. There are also a bunch of YouTube Videos specific to 5th Gen 4R. There are several different color temperature hue's you can purchase for the lows. I purchased the 5000K temperature for the lows as I didn't want crazy uber white borderline purple color temperature and it matches the highs better.

Anyway, I'll change the LEDs and really pay attention to my driving. Also leave the fog lights on.

Driving with your fog lights on at all times is creating a false sense of safety. Adding bright foreground lighting is actually counterproductive to seeing at any distance. Here is a good read on the subject:

I first had some white LED fogs, they threw light all over the place, I think some one here called them squirrel finders. Morimoto? Effect was cool when it snowed but usually not too many cars up in the trees. Then I got yellow LED fogs from xenondepot.com. They throw the light side to side. Hardest part was trying to figure out where to cable tie them up to the frame. I bought a variety pack of black cable ties from Amazon.

You might consider getting white LED fogs, think XD sells them too.

I had the same issue and disliked the light output from my stock halogens headlights from my 13 4Runner. I ended up doing a projector retrofit with big LS projectors with HIDs and it made an unbelievable difference. Here are a couple comparison shots from years ago.

You need a car with forward collision mitigation. The 4runner is too manual.
