alpine subs

I want to put some sub(s) in my car. I heard the Alpine SWE-1242 in Best Buy and liked it. They have a special offering two subs, amp, and box for around $350.

Any opinions on the Alpine subs? I also heard the R and they sounded horrible. However, it is Best Buy, and not everything is set up correctly.

$350 is about what I want to pay for sub(s) enclosure and amp total. Don't need dual subs though.

Do you want SPL or SQ? Never buy from Best Buy.

Do you already have a wiring kit?

The type Rs are so much better than the type Ss.

I would recomend checking out caraudio.com. There you can find someone who is close to you to build you a great box. It will probably be close to $100. You can also buy one online, but the quaility and output will not be as good. They are generally about $100 also.

As soon as you answer the first two questions I can help you out more.
 
I'm not really sure, as I'm kind of new to car audio. I would like a nice sound, while being able to get fairly loud volumes. I mainly listen to rap/top 40, hip-hop, pop-rock. I don't want to spend a fortune either. But I do want some quality subs that will last me, so I might not have to upgrade.

I've heard that JL subs are nice, and so are Rockford. I went to Best Buy to hear the Alpine's, because I like to hear speakers before I buy them. I love good sound quality, but don't need precise quality in the car. Thats why I went to Best Buy, and the Alpine's were the best sounding out of the few they had. However, places like this always screw up their wiring and stuff like that.

I would mainly be using the sub(s) at somewhat low volumes to sound good and not kill my ears, but want to be able to crank them and be heard to show off.

The Kenwood KFC-W3011 subs get good reviews on Crutchfield. I could get two of these subs, box, amp, kit, plans for $400. This is my budget- no more. Are these good subs? Again what do you recommend?
 
To be honest I don't know anything about those subs.

Can you post links to where you would buy everything. This way I can see what you would buy and from where.

I would say JL and Alpine are both better than Rockford and Kenwood.

Are you interested in buying anything used?

I'm not sure if your interested in buying stuff from other people, but I have a 1/0 wiring kit that I could sell you. If you buy a 1/0 kit you should not have to upgrade your wiring in the future.

If you decide to buy a 4 gauge or 1/0 kit online you are looking at $80-$110 for a good one.
 
I was thinking of buying from Crutchfield.com because I have heard they are the best place to buy car audio, and one of the cheapest.
 
Crutchfield is good for two things HU's and customer service. I personally would not buy from there because of the prices. They are quite expensive.
 
I would think that a couple W3's would get the job done. They would give him the little extra he wants and with 2 you could crank it. I suppose it would be worth it though for space and all to wait a little while and save some more and get one W6 or W7. One W7 in a Powerwedge has a pretty small footprint and would definitely give him what he wants. Ok, I guess I'm starting to sound like a damn rep for JL. I'm not, just like their stuff. And can tell you that everyone who listens to my stuff likes it too.
 
Thanks for the great advice! However, my budget is 400 for subs, amp, box, etc period. I have more money to spend, but do not want to spend over that. I'm a mobile DJ so I love music and sound, and being able to hear it well. I have the top of the line DJ speakers, and feel that I don't need to do the same with the car. I would just like to replace the stocks with nice speakers that won't put a hole in my wallet (too big of a hole). I'll take a look at the JL's you recommended.
 
One setup would be an Alpine Type R 12" or 15", an amp that does about 750 RMS, and a prefab box off the internet or one built by someone local.

Another option would be a JL W3 and an amp that does about 400 RMS.

You will also need a wiring kit. I would be happy to sell you mine.

These are just a few set ups.
