Alternator plug replacement

Today I pulled out all my power and ground cables to replace them and also do something else at the battery terminals because I’m Continually having charging and no start issues related to corrosion and loose connections.

I’m thinking about having my alternator rebuilt or maybe buy something if there is a direct bolt in that produces more amps? But I ended up breaking the clip trying to remove it from the alternator so I was wondering how easy it was to replace. Or if it’s really worth fixing / replacing.

I’m an electrical dummy, can’t solder and have never removed pins from plugs.

There are a few 140 amps that are made for 4runners, and some people have taken them from other cars and made them work (I recall seeing someone here with one from a DeVille, of all things) but without a winch/compressor/goodies you'll never need above the stock 70 amps. What's the mileage on it, do you know? Could just be going out with age.
Back on my Dodge the first thing I did was replace the alternator, as the stock one was 20 years old. Less than a year later it died on me, and ended up using the original one for the remaining 8 years I had the truck. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose

I don’t have anything yet but eventually I’ll have an arb compressor, a winch and off road lights.

My 4Runner has 214k on it and have no idea what mileage is on the alternator. I have used a rebuild shop for a high amp alternator in the past for a different vehicle and contacted him and he said he would do a stock rebuild with better internals for $113.

Personally I would take the opportunity to just upgrade the alt/battery/big 3 then, but that's just me. No need to do it twice. You could always try replacing the brush, too. Can't really remember how to do it but I remember it's very simple. Check around, maybe in the link above
 
Only way to fix the harness it to either cut the connector and solder in a new one (I know you said you don't solder but it's not too hard) or go to a junkyard and pull off another one. Should be no difference in the years for that wire harness.

There is a sort-of bolt in upgrade, the CS-144 alternators. Yes, it's off a Cadillac DeVille, I have one I bought brand new AC Delco one from Rockauto.com for about $130: More Information for ACDELCO 3351046. You'll need the harness too which someone makes them and sells on Ebay: Alternator Swap Adapter Harness Denso Toyota Oval Style to Delco CS144 4Runner | eBay. Cost me $145 for the whole deal and puts out a max of 140 amps, and more importantly powers my e-fan at full speed at 700 RPM's. The upgrade will not help with poor wiring though, I also chased an issue with dirty contacts that killed my battery.
 
Look for the number embossed on the old wire pin connector and then search 90980-(the numbers on the connector). You can buy this connector from the dealer.

How to remove the wires: There should be a plastic tab that you want to lift with a small flat mini screw driver. Then you can insert the screwdriver to push away the locking tab that keep the wire pin secured inside the plastic connector (look inside the connector from the open end to locate that locking tab). Pull a wire at a time and simply slide the wire into the new plastic connector (sometimes, you may have to lift the plastic tab on the new connector before sliding the wire into the new connector). Then get the next wire done.

My alternator rebuild place had the plug but I had ordered it prior to finding that out so I have a plug if anyone needs it $10 shipped.
