Always look up MSRP when you buy from the local STEALership

Today in San Diego at a dealership somewhere near Clairemont Mesa Blvd.

Me: I'd like to buy 6 Qts of Toyota ATF for my 97 4Runner 4WD.

Dealer: That will be $13.86 a Qt.

Me: Is that the Toyota MSRP

Dealer: The Toyota price is $13.86

Me: Is that the MSRP

Dealer: (Silence then ....) Not sure.

Me: What is the part #, I'll look it up

(I look it up; I didn't know it before walking in)

Me: The Toyota MSRP is $9.42 a Qt. Can you sell it to me for $9.42 a Qt. ?

Dealer: (pause then ....) Yes we can

Me: Ok then.


I ended up buying the ATF so I can do 1-2 drain and fills but :wtf:

The local dealer feels it is acceptable to add 40 - 50% MARK UP over MSRP on parts. $83.16 vs $56.52 for parts.

That's awesome info. Some places if you know what's up from the jump, they won't ever give you a marked up price. They may even throw you a 5% discount or so for buying "all" your parts from them.

that's great info. Where do I look up the MSRP? Are the prices I see on websites like camelback toyota parts consider MSRP?

Get another camera this year for Xmas or due to the future wedding has all non essential purchased been put on hold? My cousin just got married to the tune of about $45,000. Congrats by the way....

My local Toyota Dealer (GO Toyota - Arapahoe & Peoria in Centennial CO), does the same thing. Look up a part price on internet....MSRP might be $10, their price is like $14-$15, online parts houses (basically dealers with internet business) might price it for $7. They will claim they cant even sell at the $10 MSRP and that the $7 is below cost. Even when i show them what the part is selling for online. I just stopped going to them and just order online almost exclusively.

Absolutely highway robbery when you cant even get them to come down to MSRP.

Recently I purchased a u-joint zerk fitting from my local dealer, Toyota Santa Monica. The list price(according to any online dealer, Camelback, etc.) was $10 and change. The computer at TSM showed it as $18 list. So the price at Toyota Santa Monica is list plus 80%.

My last Death Valley adventure sucked up any play money I had. But even if I was a millionaire I'd still ask about MSRP because two local Toyota dealers have pulled this crap on me. I recently bought some misc parts for my Acura. The Acura dealership, which btw is next door to the Toyota dealership, just laughed when I asked about MSRP/List. He said "why would we sell it for more than list"; the Acura dealer even puts the list price on the receipt and sells for about 5-10% under, showing both prices on the receipt. They do this by default I found out.

About Cameras. My last camera I got on special for about $600 at the time. Its a D7000 and the 10-24 Nikon lens I bought used for half price. I'm trying to be price conscious.

About the wedding. We are actually looking at < $8K not counting the honeymoon. She works and is chipping in nearly half. Still I'd prefer to elope in the forest or on a beach with just 10 family members. I can't have everything my way I guess.

Interesting point, my local dealer acts like MSRP barely covers their cost on parts.

My friend just started working at the dealership and after 30 days gets parts at 5% over cost. Which has been slightly less then the internet toyota dealer prices.

They are just designed to profit large amounts off parts. Makes sense, but selling ABOVE msrp is a new one. There may be associated fee's and whatnot with fluids like that for them to sell the stuff. Lot's of businesses online have fine print with oils/gear oil, ect. Perhaps someone doesn't know any better behind the books and adds a fee to each quart?

At the end of the day though, I'd ask yourself, are you really surprised a stealership is overcharging you?

A dealership that charges more that MSRP is nothing new. Parts guys live of commission at most places. They did at the dealer I started at anyhow. If you can get pricing at there cost or just over maybe plus 5-10% then you are doing really well.

I just used Camelback Toyota Online Parts because it states the Toyota MSRP and I told him Acura doesn't charge above MSRP and I don't want to pay higher.

It is unfortunate for the guy to work on commission for selling parts. From a sales perspective I don't like that all. He is providing a routine service and in my case I already knew what I wanted anyways.

MSRP is way above cost. The dealer probably paid $4.00 for that bottle of ATF, MSRP is $9.42 so they are still making a boatload of cash off of me. They didn't need to try and sell it for $13.86, that's just gouging.

Frankly if the guy wasn't going to sell it to me at MSRP I would have walked away.

The dealers will price gouge as the average "mark" is uninformed. I have dealt with my parts dealership manager for about 7 years and this dealer for almost 30 years and I still must bring my own lube or come informed. I usually know the internet corporate price and usually get 25-30% off list. AFAIK, all dealers should give this discount to older model owners. Don't be afraid to press your point to the parts manager, most people don't.

I've been going off Toyotapartsales.com. On my invoice receipts they print me there are 2 columns, their MSRP, and the price I paid. Normally I pay roughly half of their MSRP

Pretty much supports what I was hinting at which is even at full MSRP they are making a killing in profit. Charging 50% more than MSRP is just the consumer getting double f#@ked.

You can get these fluids elsewhere for around 4 bucks a quart (just have to shop around). Why anyone would go to the dealer for "fluids" is beyond me. Dealerships aren't known for 'best prices' and they are in business to make money, not give stuff away.

I got a local dealer to price match camelback for me and the guy behind the counter claimed that he would have to sell me lbjs below cost in order to price match camelback. But he price matched anyways for me. I dont know how that could be.

Yep, been told that by a manager. Have also been told by guys at both local Toyota dealers that the Parts dept basically carries the rest of the dealership. They say service and sales break even and parts makes the money. Not sure what to believe, but I get my parts from Toyota Dallas.
