Yeah Ive had three people ive known that could have survived the wrecks without a doubt if they wore their seatbelt.. its a habit to me and i cant go without it.

Okay, I'm not that anal... I let people make their own decisions in my vehicle... However; I tend to drive a little more spiritedly if somebody doesn't have their belt on... Usually the second time they ride with me, they get the idea and put it on.

I once launched a guy from one side of the vehicle to the other, right across the rear seat bench... The driver's side door is the only thing that stopped him... Gotta love freshly conditioned leather

I'm not that anal either but come to think of it (your story helped) anything heavy and unsecured in your vehicle could actually kill you or severely injure you during a crash. I've seen other videos (from the inside of the car) of people not seatbelted and what happens during a crash and the results are amazing and scary. I'm really starting to think about securing my dog some way now.

Hence the reason why I don't leave ANYTHING loose in my vehicle unless I have a reason I'm transporting it someplace.

I can't stand riding in people's cars where they make the slightest turn and you hear crap rolling/sliding around all over the place. It's unsafe. Not to mention the fact that they then take turns SO slow because they don't want all their sh!# sliding around... If they'd just clean out their vehicles, they'd not be slowing traffic down as much.

Why do you say that?

I've been into racing for a long time and that is one of the things we drill into the newbies. Keep your cars cleaned out. Not only is it dangerous if you get into a wreck, it's distracting when you're driving.

There's nothing anal about a simple thing you can do to be safer on the road. Less distractions = more alertness available to do what you're supposed to be doing -- driving. When you get behind the wheel of a car, you're not only responsible for yourself and your passengers, you're responsible for the well-being of others around you and in your path. Too many people don't realize that they have a responsibility when they're in a car to control it in such a way that they aren't endangering others and they disregard that responsibility by talking on a phone, swatting at the kids in the back seat, eating their breakfast/lunch, sipping their coffee, putting on makeup, reading the newspaper, etc, etc...

I was actually talking about the people you leave loose in your vehicle. Isn't an unbelted adult just as dangerous or even more so than some lighter little things that are unsecured?

I'm not knocking you as I have never required my passengers to buckle up just pointing out that the unbelted person could do the belted people a lot of harm.

I always make front passengers wear their belt or I don't start driving. It's the driver's responsibility to make sure front seat passengers wear the belt.

Had a friend who was driving in NJ where there's a front passenger belt law. He didn't make the passenger wear it. They hit a parked car, passenger went through the windshield and did $25k worth of damage to his face. He had no insurance and was forced to sue his friend (the driver) to pay the hospital bills.

Had an accident one time and was wearing my belt of course. An idiot woman asked me weeks later when I was describing it if I "would have had time to put my belt on when I realized I was going to crash". LOL

I'm bad, I almost never wear a seatbelt. Althought, because the seatbelt light on the 4Runner blinks if you don't wear it I am trying to make a conscious effort to wear it. Easy habit to break, hard one to get back into.
I guess I will make a mental note never to get into a police chase...

I think this is a repost on here and it's over two months old now but still scary and an awful way to die.

Did my residency at a Level I trauma center in Missouri. Anytime the information on the incoming trauma(s) mentioned "ejected or partially ejected from vehicle", it was usually very bad. Was always amazed how often the vehicle would come to rest or roll over the person after they were ejected (or the body part hanging out the window in a partial ejection would get turned to hamburger). Ejection from a vehicle is almost a certain guarantee of extremely serious injuries or death.

My mom fell asleep at the wheel back in 1988 in a brand new (at the time) Acura Integra. She was not wearing her seatbelt and was thrown out the passenger window of the car. The car, according to eyewitnesses, rolled 4-5 times side-to-side and 1-3 times end-over-end. I was asleep with the rear seats folded down, laying in the hatchback... When the vehicle stopped, it ended up upside down on top of her. I was uninjured, with just a few bruises and a couple scrapes, but she was not so fortunate. She spent 5 days in the trauma unit before they knew whether or not she was going to live. In all, she spent 30 days in the hospital after sustaining 4 fractured ribs, 1 1/2 collapsed lungs, ruptured spleen, split liver, fractured pelvis, a bruised heart muscle, and a concussion. She had her spleen removed and other than having to take baby aspiring every day for the high platelet count associated with not having a spleen, she is doing fine today. She always wears a seat belt, now.

Hope she also gets the vaccinations and pneumovax for those nasty encapsulated bacteria that people post-splenectomy are suceptible to. Cars seem to have a nasty habit of ending up on top of or rolling over anybody ejected.
