So I've been looking for a tfr for a while now, my search is for a 2006+ v6, any wheel drive with good maintenance records for 9-10k, and not black or brown (live in desert). I find something with decent records but they'll want like $14,000 with 170000mi, or find most of the records but never a diff change at the same mileage.

The mileage doesn't bother me too much but missing items does.

So the question is... Am I crazy?

You're Not crazy.
I looked for about a month on just about every online car site known to man - set price alerts on all - everything before I found mine. I purchased last week. 2006 Limited V6 4x4 with 155K miles. I got it for > 10K.

I had it inspected by one of those on-site used car inspection places, I pulled the Autocheck, CarFax, Vehiclehistory.com report and registered with Toyota to see its service records. I did all this in an effort to see why it was so much cheaper than others. It has rust on the undercarriage as its from PA, but nothing else really wrong mechanically. The biggest issue found was when the mechanic test drove it, he heard the suspension knock brought up in these forums - the dealer is fixing that with end link and busing replacement.

Keep looking, these things hold value like crazy and the search process can be frustrating if you have a budget like ours! I haven't even taken delivery of my ride yet and I'm < $500 in mods purchased and < $500 in preventative maintenance + more for rust treatment. It will take sometime, but there is a 4Runner out there for ya!
 
Used 4runners are hard to come by. well cared for ones are even harder. things like diff changes dont bother me. That is easy work. If you are handy I would buy one cheap with shitty records and just pump another $1000 in plugs, seals, axels, brakes and fluids in it and call it a day.

The one thing I would look for is over spray under the front bumper. both t4rs I bought had hidden bumper cover repairs.

I just picked up my 07 V6 Limited with 66k mi, super clean in/out/frame, good records, with a lift, 32" Duratracs on aftermarket wheels with the correct backspacing, stock wheels with studded snows, and a nice Thule basket for $16.5k. There deals are out there. I find deciding what you want and staying way on top of the search helps. The good stuff goes really fast.

Like others have said, just keep looking. It took me almost 3 months to find one that fit what I was looking for, or at least didn't have any deal breakers. There are things that can be added (wheels, seats, grill, etc), and things that are cost prohibitive to do so (V8, 4WD, Sunroof, etc.). I'd suggest being flexible on things that can be added, and firm on those that cannot.

An SUV that retailed loaded for 38K or so is still fetching 16.5K and is creeping on on 11 years old. That's incredible. Congrats adkfinn.

Remember to always look at craigslist as well, since a lot of people try selling it their first since its free to list.

There are a number of sites that let you search all of craiglist (versus just your city). I googled two real quick below. Best of luck and even though its a frustrating process it will be worth it.

I looked all summer for mine. Found it on Craigslist and jumped on it right away.

Talking about holding their value- 4Runners are way cheaper than FJs or Tacos of similiar mileage.

Agreed on CL. That is where I find a lot of very good deals. The trick is knowing what you want being able to verify the condition on your own. It isn't for everyone, but that creates opportunity.
I would say that Search Tempest and other scraping/aggregating sites don't work as well as CL since CL seems to be tweaking their site often. Now that you can select 'nearby' on CL itself, I select everything that shows up and end up searching a very broad geographic area. For me, it works well enough that I have stopped using the other sites and use CL directly again.

I'm mostly looking for a stock ride with less than 150k and the biggest thing is no accidents and some kind of records. Found one in Vegas but the dealer has some bad reviews. I know enough about cars to know that I need to have it inspected. I can tire kick and change all my fluids but as far as what to actually check I'm a little naive..
 
This is so funny to me right now.

Funny enough, my 4Runner was totaled a while ago in an accident that resulted in a settlement check. It was a Sport Edition w/ V8 and 65xxxx miles. I was so sad realizing my chances of finding another one with similar miles were so slim at this point. I just came across an ad for the exact same 4Runner, color and the engine, including mileage so I scheduled the first meeting available for tmw AM ASAP. It's about an hour away and I'm actually prepared to drive it back home same day. I'm going to get shit done tomorrow, it took me a while to come across a listing like this one. Don't lose hope, you'll find your 4R!!!! If I can find another one let alone the exact same 4Runner I used to have then you can find one yourself!!!

Sorry to OP for hijacking the thread but got an email from people wanting an update from today's test drive :laugh:


Test drove the truck and it felt good mechanically wise. The salesman was kind of a dick to me though, insisting I couldn't return it within a certain time period if issues arose (it's part of a local brand and on most of their sites they have a 7 day return policy). I told him I was not about to spend money on a vehicle I could not have inspected prior to payment and was ready to walk out of the dealership. Guy gave in and informed me it'd have to pass local state inspection before I can drive it off their lot to have the truck inspected at a dealership. So that being said, I scheduled an appointment at a local Toyota dealership few minutes away for a PPI and hopefully everything goes well!

There is definitely some work needed on the truck; this is a picture that shows the worst damage on the truck with scruffs unseen in this picture. I checked the underbody and did not see anything that stood out.

It's getting close to closing time for the dealership this evening and I have yet been contacted regarding the status of the truck truck after leaving earlier today. I'm heading back up there in the morning and taking it to the dealership right away. Fingers crossed the inspection goes well so I can finally end the search for a Sport Edition pending the final price!

One thing for sure though, it needs a complete paint job. First thing that came to mind when I saw this Sport in person :laugh::laugh:


I'm praying for you, OP! There has to be a 4Runner that's bound to turn up at one point. Just a matter of time :fro:
 
No problem anonymous, sounds like your deal is moving in the right direction. I hate dealers, always gotta try to figure out not what they are lying about but why.. I just assume everything they say is a lie. Lol
