Been lurking around here and have struggled with an install question for a HF/VHF/UHF radio.

I would like to mount the unit (remotely) where a sub-woofer might be installed on the passenger side in the cargo bay behind the interior (plastic) paneling. I am also curious as to coax runs from the antenna mount on the roof rack, thru the tailgate, and behind the paneling and pillars to the radio.

I have done a few searches and most send me directly to the in 'dash' radio install, which I am already well-versed in and can do in my sleep.

What tools do I need for this job and is there a video on popping off the interior cabin paneling and pillars? I get a bit nervous with the plastic hooks breaking, etc.

you can install a pioneer unit, and use there wired remote accessory for that.

that remote uses the pioneer unit with ip-bus.
i think this one dont need the unit with ip-bus CD-MR70 - Enjoy Wired Remote Features | Pioneer Electronics USA
but i cant look at the manual.

What antenna are you going to run, and where?
I would get a permanent mount on the roof for 2m/70cm bands. I have heard good things about running screwdriver antennas for HF, with the mount welded to the bumper.

I am running a diamond hatch antenna mount. I ran the coax through the same gromet the washer fluid goes through. Then ran the coax down the pillar and along the wheel well. My brain is behind my rear seats. Then have a remote mount with flexible arm mounted to my passenger seat. Set up works well and was easy to install. No special tools needed and the face and external speaker dont get in the way of the passenger. Check my build for photos.

Are you locked-in on mounting the antenna on a roof rack?
Not the ideal place, they usually aren't grounded well for one thing.

This is how I mounted my radio. I removed the cup holder insert (since its not the greatest cup holder anyways) and mounted a 1/4 thick sheet of acrylic cut to the shape of the cup holder. The head unit is mounted via the radio's factory suction cup. This way its in a good position to see and I can remove it easily if I leave the truck parked where I'm worried about theft. The radio chassis is mounted in the rear cargo storage compartment (where the sub woofer would be) and the external speaker is mounted under the headrest. The antenna is mounted on a Diamond hatchback mount and the coax comes in underneath the tail light unit (easy for me since I have an aftermarket rear bumper) and only has to go as far as where the chassis is mounted.

Yaesu FTM-350AR UHF/VHF transceiver w/Yaesu FGPS-1 GPS Antenna Unit.

The mic clip is attached to a bracket that I made that mounts in the ashtray slot.

The radio chassis is mounted in the rear compartment next to the auxiliary battery power bus.

Yaesu MLS-200-M10 external speaker. I fabricated a bracket for it to mount behind the driver underneath the head rest. The speaker wire is routed under the seat cover.

Diamond K400CNMO Antenna mount w/ either a Comet SBB1NMO or SBB5NMO Antenna.

I don't run HF but a friend of mine from 120 does. He runs a Yaesu ATAS 120 antenna on a hatchback lip mount. It works fine mounted there since I saw him make contact with a ham in Tasmania while we were at Big Bear, CA
