Amazing about the 4th gen 4runner...

I must say that one of the most startling things that i find about the 4th gen 4runner is how stable it is at high speed. Handling is effortless and there is great confidence at high highway speeds. A very comfortable ride and solid sharp steering for a BOF truck.

On the contrary, I read that 5th gen owners need to perform regular steering correction at highway speeds. That can get very annoying very quickly.

117mph is uneventful in the 4Runner. Been there more than once.

FWIW the 4R doesn't hold a candle to the LC in on or off road composure at any speed.

I should hope so. For an additional 40k, the LC had better be head and shoulders above normal SUV trucks.

How do you get to 117?? My 04 & 08 would shutdown at 113ish?? Just curious?? or is it a V8 vs V6 thing??? My work truck (11 Chevy 2500 6.0L 4.10 gears) shuts down at 92MPH That is frustrating ocasionally.

I was able to hit that speed in my V6 Scott. Of course that was before 33" mud tires. Now I won't go over 90-95 tops out of fear of my tires exploding and the fact that my truck shakes.

The speedo won't tell you more than the 110, but I check it out on two different gps systems that both got up to 118.

OK so the Speedo is just more or less useless at speeds over 100 I guess. I'm not sure I ever had my GPS up at those times. Tends to be between work and Home, only person in the vehicle ect. If the GPS is up we are usually on a roadtrip and the entire Family is in the Vehicle and speeds over 100 are not even a thought.

Larger tires which cause the speedometer to register slower than what the car is actually doing.

If you are worried about going these speeds with your family onboard...then you should be equally worried with your family sitting at home. How thoughfull of you that you would spare them; that in the event of the worse happening to you with your family onboard should only happen to you when you are alone. Nice! Thoughtfull to leave your family a nice present. You will be useless to them when you are dead, or a vegetable and your wife and kids need to wipe your vegetable donkey butt, and change your pee bag, and feed you baby mush.

I think about that when I start going too fast. Or when I'm doing work on my trucks. I need to think of how useful will I be for my daughter if this cutting disk cracks up, or this sheet metal goes flying into my eye or my neck and I wasn't properly protected. I need to take care of her and provide for her, not her take care of her old man. Think about that for a while.

I'll admit that I a guilty of spiking the speedo on my 4Runner before I started modifying it. I pegged the needle at about 0200 on the 101 towards San Fran, no traffic except for 1 car a mile behind me. Am I saying it was okay? No, it wasn't but I made sure that if I was going to choose to do something stupid like that, that I'm the one that gets hurt.

I got it there and got it out of my system and I won't ever see a reason to get that high again...

I would agree with Skyline, I should have taken it to the track rather than doing it on the road.

I'm not saying it can't do it and will fall apart if you do. I'm saying if you have reservations about doing it when your family is onboard because you are fearing the worse, then you should be equally worried when they are not on-board since you would be leaving them with a whole pack of sorry problems if the worse you fear with them on board happens when they are not on-board.

Went to Belleayre in NY to do a little skiing yesterday and again I can't say enough about how stable, solid, and quiet this truck is at speed. 5 hours of driving on the NY Thruway was a pleasure and effortless.

I don't remember my prior T4R v6 being as stable. Does the full time 4wd make it more like your glued to the road?

It wouldn't be that actual 4wd, maybe the added weight of the V8. There are some people that believe 4wd keeps you planted to road and therefore makes it possible to drive like an idiot in bad weather but thats definitely not true.

The sport suspension being stiffer helps the vehicle grip and have less body roll, I noticed this especially when I switched from my 03 sport to the softer SR5 suspension on my 08
