Hi

own a 07 SR5 V6, was thinking about upgrading to Amsoil signature 5w-30. currently run (mobil 1 w/Toy oem filter)

always ran amsoil in my ATV (yfz450) , but never in my SR5

should i just stick with my current setup(mobil 1) or is it a worth while upgrade?

sorry did a search, with no real comparison between mobil 1 and amsoil

also was looking at mobil 1 extended performance

thanks......

I just put the Amsoil Signature Synthetic 5w-30 (the one that says it'll go 25k between changes?) it feels good so far. I know Amsoil is a great company (I run all Amsoil in my diffs and transfer case) and they say they gaurentee 25,000mi under normal driving.

Its a bit expensive (was close to $90 for 8qts for my V8, I like to flush the engien with a sacrifical quart before putting the drain plug back in) but even if I get 10k-15k out of it it'll be worth it in my opinion.

Stick with you current setup or run Amsoil. Mobil 1 is a great Oil too. Either one is good Oil. I run Amsoil 0W-30 in my vehicles with yearly changes. I run it in my Diff and transfer case as well. Other items I use it in are 4 Dirt Bikes, lawnmower, weadeater, blower, misc. Will it make them last longer? Who knows, I just prefer the stuff.

Common "synthetic" oils, such as Mobil 1, use the same chemical base as conventional "non-synthetic" oil, expect that the "synthetic" has more wax filtered out thanks to advances in crude oil processing. Class III motor oils labeled as "synthetic" have better detergents and additives, along with undisclosed amounts of actual synthetic material mixed into the base-stock. Off-the-shelf, Class III "synthetic" oil is better than regular motor oil as it is more refined and has better additives, but the term synthetic is a marketing ploy. Class III motor oil is highly refined crude oil. The term "synthetic," when it comes to motor oils, is a marketing discription and not a chemical differentiation.

PAO oils, falling under Class IV, are fully synthetic and are extremely uniform at the molecular level. The two most common reasons for the use of PAO oils is for extended drain intervals, or to combat extreme weather. The true chemical benefit Class IV offers to engines is the oil's ability to stay pourable at extremely low temps (without the need of additives to keep the oil thick at operating temps), and to displace acids and burnt residues. For a Class III oil to come close to a Class IV oil's cold weather viscosity (pourable at cold temps, yet remain thick at operating temperatures), more additives are used. Through the life of an oil, additives are going to deteriorate much quicker than the actual base-stock of the oil, whether the base stock is PAO or some form of crude-derived oil. PAO oils are less dependent on additives to maintain the cold weather weight, and a little less dependent on buffers to neutralize acids. Hence, PAO oils have longer life.

Mobil 1 is a great oil. I live in an extreme environment, so I've opted for a PAO based oil: Amsoil's signature series. I'd have no problem using a Class III if needed.

Whether or not to switch is up to you, as both oils are great. I'm not a fan of marketing descriptions, but the oils discussed here are both great.

How has it worked for you so far?

I have been using Amsoil for 10 years now and in 2 4Runners. I love it and will continue to use it for all my vehicles. I would recommend Amsoil way before Mobil 1. Amsoil has some test results on there website, they pretty much beat every oil that it has been compared to.

If you go to the Amsoil website, sign up as a "preferred customer" pay $25 a year as a member like Costco, you get up to 25% off list. Click and ship, super simple. As far as the oil is concerned, Amsoil offers a testing kit so you can send in your samples for analysis. I run the XL and do my changes every 10K miles and run their filters as well. The ONLY thing not Amsoil in my truck is the tranny fluid (V-8 WS fluid) and the radiator fluid....I use Toyota pink as per the book. EVERY thing else is Amsoil and I have 193K on my Yota. Stuff just works!

It's ironic that this thread was resurrected as I was looking closely this morning about Amsoil Signature 5w-30. Excellent oil!

Am very familiar with Group IV and V synthetics as I run Redline in all my diffs and transfer case and used to run it in my manual tranny.

I also ran Redline and Motul in air cooled motorcycles.

For the past twenty years, run Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum in engines.

All great stuff.

Coming out of extended warranty soon and being that the 4.7 V8 is very easy on oil... I'm going to transition to Mobil 1 5W-30 EP with Mobil 1 filters.

Buying these on sale at WalMart or AAP or Autozone... easy to buy and replace.

YMMV... all these high quality oils are easy to use with the Toyota engines.
