Analog trip meter stuck

98 runner.....trip meter is stuck on "000.0", odometer and speedometer work fine. Hesitant to pull the dash apart, any ideas?

Just purchased this vehicle and the previous owner said it has been like that for over a hundred thousand miles

Have you tried to push or pull the reset knob? If it is pushed in half way the wheels in the trip counter will not seat with the wheels attached to the main mechanism.

Tried that about 10 dozen times now. The reset knob definitely is contacting the wheels of the meter when I push, I can tell by feel. But nothing moves Kind of annoying, but suppose I'll have to deal with it!

Yeah mine has 280k miles and trip meter hasn't worked since I bought it, only goes to 009.8. So far the speedometer is the only part that you can't get from the dealer anymore, only one I've come across anyway. Perhaps there is a speedo repair guy in your area that can help you out, there's a guy in my area who quoted me $150 to make my speedo like new again, I just don't care that much about my trip meter.

Went to the U-Pull & Pay today and got a cluster from a 98 with 234k on the clock (A whopping $13). I made sure the trip meter would reset correctly - it does. I assumed you tube would be full of how to's on odometer roll back but apparently the scumbags that do such things are keeping quiet. I want to roll this thing back to my current mileage (189K). Any pointers?

Hate to resurrect an older thread, but did you ever find instructions? I have a similar issue with my 98. I can reset the meter, but it won't turn correctly.

Had similar problem rather than tear it apart I sprayed 3-in-one dry lock lube into ODO and Trip meter assembly.
The spray tube can get into assembly pretty well, there are teeth on number wheels and other gears inside behind.
Spray it from different angles pretty heavy worked for me, might for you.

Thanks, Ill give that a shot. I figure worst case Ill get a scan gauge as it looks like those can do trip meters and even tell me my mpg.

I also am having an issue with my trip meter. But it is counting too slowly...about 40% too low?
