Android OBD2 Scanner

Don't spend more than $50 on one of those ELM adapters, there is no reason to. They are all compatible with those programs.
I just ordered one on the 23rd, hopefully will get it tomorrow. I'll post some info from my droid inc with torque.

If you have an Android phone and don't want to pay $150 for an OBD2 Scanner, there's a $5 android app called Torque that will sync with a $30 ELM Bluetooth OBD2 dongle to give you real-time sensor info, code reading/clearing, data logging, and troubleshooting info on your phone. I just ordered the bluetooth dongle, so I'll let you guys know how it works for me and maybe get some screenshots.

I have a droid 2, for which there is a nice car dock that mounts to the windshield. This way, I can see real-time MPG data, coolant temp, a/f ratio, and air temp/flow. I'm pretty excited to see the difference in air flow, intake pressure, and intake temperature w/ deck plate and ISR mods compared with stock.

This sounds great...the perfect combination of tech, surplus data, and excuses to spend money! If you can confirm it works and post some screen shots I'll buy one the next day!

I caught wind of this little gadget a couple weeks ago and purchased one of the above mentioned ELM 327 scanners off amazon and received it today. Dunno what the deal is but it wont connect to my droid. I have the full version of torque. It came with one of those stupid little mini discs and I cant play it in my mac although from what people have said its just full of ads. Ill stay posted for other updates and dont want to discourage people from is widely considered a very neat tool.
 
Picked up my scanner at the PO this morning. Just got a cheap one off eBay...

I just have the free version of Torque for now, but everything seems to work fine. It picks up data for 16 items from the phone (GPS, Accelerometer) and ECU.

I'm not showing any faults and there weren't any stored on the ECU.

This sounds well worth $40. Any info on how long it stays connected to the phone... as in while driving an hour or more?

I assume it stays connected as long as there is power to both the scanner/phone and your bluetooth connection is secured. Check out the Torque forums, seems to have a lot of functionality.

I read that the next update is supposed to include Trans Temp for vehicles with a separate trans ECU. I don't think our Runners have a separate trans ECU though?

From the Torque forum...
"Multi ECU support will be making its way to the next big release which is keeping me busy at the moment! So, if your transmission is handled by a seperate ECU, then you will be able to read the temperature from that ECU. You will also be able to read whatever other standard sensors that ECU exports (but it’s up to you to know what they are for your make of vehicle at the moment)

If you only have 1 ECU (the transmission doesn’t have it’s own), then the temperature sensor may be hidden in an extended section of the PID list, which is manufacturer specific. I’ve not seen this yet, so am hoping that most setups have an ECU specifically for the transmission."
