Android OBD2 Scanner

I'm interested in this. It would be much cheaper than getting a ScanGauge or the new product for Garmin GPSs.

I think we know which "dongle" to get, but which app is the best?

Well, so far this has been an enormous pain in the a$$. I apparently chose the wrong seller on amazon, because my device NEVER arrived. Then I checked their feedback and lots of guys have had the same issue. They send a shipping confirmation, but don't actually ship the item. I have filed a claim with amazon, and should get my money back in 3-6 weeks. At that point, I'll find another seller and try again.

The top rated app out there is torque , just go to the market and search odbii , and start reading around ....

I took my ipad back and am waiting on the new xoom or toshiba tablet to come out in the next few months , this would be.awesome for that ¡!

update!

Alright guys I got my scanner in the mail reccently and have been testing it out and I am pretty impressed with the functions on the app. I have a 97 4 runner ltd and the phone is a htc evo with the torque app. I got my obd2 scanner off of ebay for like 50 bucks and it works like a charm. Bellow are the functions that you can have displayed on your phone.

acceleration sensor (total, X, Y or Z axis)
altitude (gps)
engine load
engine rpm
fuel trim bank 1 sensor 1 or 2
mass air flow rate
02 volts bank 1 sensor 1 or 2
speed(gps)
throttle position
timing advance
trip distance
0-100kph time
0-60mph time
1/4 mile time
1/8 mile time
ambient air temp
barometric air temp
engine coolant temp
fuel level
fuel pressure
fuel trim bank 1 0r 2 sensors 1 thru 4 for each bank
horsepower
intake air temp
intake manifold pressure
kilometers per litre (or average)
litres per 100 kilometer (or average)
miles per gallon (instant or average)
02 volts bank 1 or 2 sensors 1 thru 4 for both banks

As you can see there are alot of functions that allows you to customize your phone to monitor every little thing that your truck is doing. On my phone I have 7 different pages I can set up and customize just the way I want it. BTW there are more functions than just these. It can show you what codes your showing for a check engine light, Log where you drive, log all the data it collects, and you can share your logs with friends through this app. All the things listed above can be shown on your phone as a dial graph or digital display. I took some screen shots of how I have my phone set up as of right now but I will be changing it soon just so I can see a bigger picture of what my truck is doing. I am very impressed with this thing so far. I just turn my bluetooth and gps on and make sure my scanner is plugged in and sset it up in my truck and go. The phone stays on the entire time I am driving and until I turn it off. well worth the 60 or so bucks I paid for it.

htc incredible :rooted

fyi, i was scared to root as well for the longest time, till a friend who is a manager at verizon showed me how easy and safe it really was
and have been sold ever since.

So y'all would say it's worth it?

Does it display any temperatures like oil, transmission, etc...?

Anybody have a link to the cheapest scanner or "dongle" or whatever you want to call it?

Dang. If they were accurate I would be all over this.

I don't want to pay the $100 plus for the Scan Gage. I just wanted something that was sleek and still let me see those types of gauges.

kinda disagree

Nope. Just coolant, and a very inaccurate AVG MPG, Horespower, and Torque guage. Get a Scan Guage II

OK i do agree with you that the mpg, hp and torque are off BUT everything else from what i have seen has been on. Even if your using the mpg guage it will tell you what mpg you are getting at that very moment and you can pretty much guess or average it in your head. I like it.SO I disagree and I think it was well worth the 60 bucks I paid for the app and the scanner. Just for the simple fact that I like to work on my truck. I have had way to many mechanics try and steal money from me and do things the wrong way. I like the scanner cuz I can diagnose the problem myself. The app tells me what codes are on the computer and I can fix them...

The only useful function of the ap is that I can monitor my coolant temp in actual degrees, everything else is worthless. A $20 scanner or using one at your local auto parts store allows you to diagnose the problem yourself aswell. I still think it was a waste of money.

app not showing up

when ya'll bought the app, did it take a day or two for it to show up on your phone? I bought it yesterday, and it isn't on my phone yet. maybe they wait for the credit card transaction to go through (its still pending)?

yeah. mine came out to like $5.00 or something (it was in british pounds/pence). i sent them an email and haven't heard anything

yeah it should have been done asap, there's no lag between buying an app on your phone and when you actually revive it, it should be instant.

use app planet like said above but you have to keep an eye on his web page as appplanet goes down a lot but it's every program on the market for free and a vast majority of it works great

McFly,

I just bought the full version of Torque today and something happened to the original download. I'm not exactly sure what, because it didn't show as failed or anything. I just went back to the app in the app store, clicked on the button that now said "Purchased" and just redownloaded the app. It's on my phone now and runs fine.

I hope that helps.
