Another 4WD light blinking thread?

I have read so many threads about the 4WD light blinking and the case not shifting in and out of 4WD. One thing that I never saw mentioned though. I had this problem also, especially taking it out of 4 high. I took my 4Runner out and put it in and out of 4WD numerous times, like probably 20 or so. Now it shifts in and out very quickly with the light never flashing. Just thought I would mention it to you guys who are having problems. I think it was a matter of the 4WD not being used enough. The owner's manual tells us to drive in 4WD ten miles per month to keep everything lubricated. I hope this helps someone else.

I drove the 4runner today and it took about five seconds with the light blinking to go into 4WD high. I drove it for less than a mile and tried to take it out of 4WD and it took almost a half a mile for the light to quit blinking and finally go back into 2 WD. SO, it does shift back and forth with too much time passing. Anyone know if it would be the front diff sensor or one on the transfer case?

Thanks

Joe

I can put mine in and i pops right in, Just make sure your not on the gas or brake. Just coasting that way everything can line itself up without fighting and engine or brakes.

Guess what? I tried exactly what you said today and the 4WD worked perfectly. Is there any explanation why it works flawlessly when coasting at a slow speed and how it has trouble shifting in and out at higher speeds when gasing or braking or turning? Is something wearing out ? The manual says you can shift into 4H while travelling 55MPH. I will NOT try that. No reason to.
Thanks again for the reply.

Check out your owners manual or get one from my sigline link, lots of good information in there, including this.

The manual says to go straight ahead and go a little faster or a little slower to let it do it's thing..... I have turned on 4wd (awd) many times at 55, that is how it is designed to work. Great for when it starts raining, snowing etc.

my assumption is the gears/splines need to line up and the electric actuators cant over power the motor to line them up correctly. thats why it pops right in while coasting. thats just my theroy though.
