Another ABS, VSC, TRAC, ABS lights + No Speedometer Thread

Hey everyone. Just signed up, hoping to get a little help and advice.

My wife has a 2002 4runner 4x4. Unfortunately, it has had more problems over the last several years than I ever expected.

This morning, the Brake, VSC TRAK, VSC OFF and ABS lights stayed on. On my way to the shop, I also noticed the speedometer wasn't working. From what I gathered from my local shop, the skid ECU is not getting or sending any information to the computer - i.e. not even throwing any codes saying it isn't working. They said they would need to start with replacing the skid ECU with a rebuit or new one at a cost of ~$1400 or $1800, respectively. I'm just not sure it's worth it at this point, but not really in a position to buy a new car.

I have been searching and reading a few somewhat related threads, but not sure they really match up competely.

I will ask the shop to check the gas cap and brake fluid levels, but I don't think either of those affect the speedometer. Need to look into the Zero Point Calibration a bit more and ask them to try and clear the codes, too.

Any other suggestions or ideas are appreciated.

I talked to the shop this morning, and they confirmed that they already checked the gas cap, fluid levels, etc. Said they went through a long series of items after doing quite a bit of research on their end. Sounds like the Skid ECU is dead.

Any suggestions other options for getting a skid ecu? Would a salvage one work? Is it worth "rebuilding" mine vs getting a new one?

Please give me your thoughts and ideas. Thanks.

NO codes at all? No p0500, nothing?
Id seriously avoid aftermarket ecu's in general.

Just thought I'd follow up. They did end up replacing the skid control ECU. The rebuilder could not get parts to fix the old ECU, so we had to order a new one through Toyota. So, after $2100 (all in), everything seems to be back to normal.

Well thats the part that sucks about having so many electronics on board I guess, is the cost to fix them.
Good that it's fixed though, even if a little pricey.
