Another elocker question....Gear swap

I know it's been beat to death, but I can't find my answer, advanced apologies if I've missed it.

My t4r has 4.10 gears. I've located a locker assembly (housing and all) that is geared 4.30. I've also located free and clear 4.10 ring and pinon gears.

I hate the idea of having to replace the front diff with a 4.30 unit, how hard would it be to swap the 4.10 gears into the elocker 3rd member? I'm pretty new at gear stuff, but can make my way around the vehicle fairly effeceintly otherwise...

Thanks in advance.

It's no different than swapping gears on a non-locker third member. Google is your friend there rather than trying to explain the details. You will need some specialized tools like a dial indicator and inch pound torque wrench as well as a way to press and remove bearings from the pinion and the carrier.

It isn't to bad, patience and read twice before doing it :)

Toyota Gear Swap Tech

I reference this to refresh, but mostly now I can do it with out looking (not always a good thing).

Gears aren't expensive actually, 4.30 are better for bigger tires.

He's right, I think I got 5.29's for 134 and change for my Dad's Toyota. I don't BELIEVE that came with the kit you need also, but I want to say it was all less than 300, closer to 250 (it was awhile ago).

I'll be doing this in a few weeks, swapping my 4.56 into my new e-locker axle. I'm either going to take my 3rd member to a professional or have my mechanic friend set up the gears.

You should keep the 4.30 & swap the front to 4.30. It'd be pretty dumb not to.

Aha... I was thinking the same with the 4:30 locker listed in the CL in your area. I am now busy with new to me 100 series TLC and gave my 4runner for my wife to use. She hardly knows how to engage the 4wd so a locker will make no sense.

The best for you to do is get it done right first time. Send the 3rd member and the 4:10 ring and pinion to the toyota diff guru in AZ. Call Zuk
