Another engine swap thread & theory

Welcome to another silly engine swap thread  ...ok here's the theory...the new 2.4 or 2.7 (I forget) 4 banger is said to have the same HP as the 3.0...so you'd have the same lack of power issue you have now but should be better gas mileage...and a supercharger then you'd have more power and atleast the same mph if not better than we have now...and you shouldn't have any of the clearance issues you have with other engine swaps...course now bolting up to the existing tranny now that's another issue altogether :) haha

now this theory is for 99.9% highway use...the off road guys prob need the extra grunt that comes with the 3.4...but for all highway use seems like the supercharged 2.4/2.7 would be the better choice

course I could just be bored and just sitting here thinking of stuff :bash:

Well you didn't say what the swap would be into, I'll assume a 1st or 2nd gen Runner. The 2.4 or 2rz would be the last choice, they made 142 hp and 160 torque and had no balance shaft, probably an improvement over a 22r or 22re but not a 3.0 V6. The 3rz would be a sound choice, it is a 2.7 with 150hp and 177 torque with balance shafts, better than the 22re line and certainly equal to the 3.0. Improvements would be legendary Toyota 4 banger reliability, V6 is darn good as well, less maintenance as it has fewer plugs and a t-chain, not belt. The 3.4 would be a good choice for power at 190hp and 220 torque, from a tacoma, 183hp 217 torque from a Runner, but would have the same maintenance issues as the 3.0, T-belt and such. Either way you may need a new tranny, harness and computer, but I'm not positive of compatibility. I drive a 00 Runner with the 2.7 and am quite happy with it, mostly a road truck and light trails to hiking spots. I would strongly urge a 5 speed and low gear ratio, mine has the stock 4.56, to make up for the relative low power numbers and heavy vehicle. With a s/c I bet the 2.7 would really wake right up. My only complaint is say in 4wd my truck is hurting up steep long hills in 3rd at 30 or under, I am in 2nd from 20-30 mph as 3rd does not have the power to pull in those situations.

I think I'm gonna just rebuild my 3.0--I just bought (last night) a 95 with the 3VZ-E(minus a rod), and any swaps will be costly. I think the easiest swap would be the 22re seeing how they did put these in the 2nd gens as well. I do actually like the 22RE, doing most of the labor myself (except for machine work), I built my 22RE in my 85, and I have about the same hp and torque out of it as the 3.0 has, I'm sitting inbetween 150-160hp and about 160ft lb of torque. And still getting close to 20 mpg with 35" tires. I built it for about 1300$, so not to bad. As for the 3.0 though, It sucks because I don't have much money right now so I think I'm just going to do a 3.0 crate motor, as I'm sure my cranks gone and severely damaged cylinder walls. I was checking into how much the 3.4 conversion would be.... Not including the engine---between 1200-2000$ for everything else needed, plus who knows how much for a decent 3.4.
