Another light conversion thread.

So I have searched on the forum about the led conversion for the gauges and hvac system in my 4runner, and I know the topic has been covered alot, but I couldn't find any answers. I have an older style hvac unit (pic below) and have replaced the lights with #74 red LEDs, but the output and hotspots are terrible. Hal of the gauges can't be seen in the dark since there are only the 2 bulbs that are pretty far apart.

So my question is, is there anything I can to to fix this? Any recommendations for different bulbs that will actually work? I bought my current ones from super brightness.com.

Also, I have a base 99, and the defroster, ect, and back widow buttons do not light up, should they.

I always use the Google search technique, but still cannot find the answer.
I know how to change them and all, and i know the bulbs are #74, but i have not seen one thread addressing this question.
