Another New guy question

Forum members were kind in sharing opinions on my only other post, I am looking for help again, hearing the thoughts of others helps.

I am back in a buying mode as it looks like my F250 will sell soon. There are two vehicles that fit my criteria, both are 4wd and are at Carmax, the '06 I have seen and driven the '04 I have not. Carmax cars are generally very clean, the '06 would make 9+ on a scale where 10 is new, I am guessing that the '04 is similar. Both are Limited models with virtually the same equipment. The '06 has 95,000 miles and they want $2000 more for it than the '04 which has 75,000. What do you all think?

Personally, I'd save the money and go with the lower mileage 04. There was a change in the body style between the years, biggest difference is the shape of the fenders (04 will be flat, 06 will be rounded), the front bumper/fog lights, and LED tail lights. The other big change is the 06 will have a little more power because they added VVTI. However, with the $2k higher price tag, you the differences aren't worth it. Again, that's just my opinion. If you do decide on the 06, be sure to look at the timing belt. If it's not been replaced, that will need to be done ASAP, and will only add to the price tag.
 
milage on the 06 is high in my opinion, so unless the more power, projector headlights,led tail lights,different fogs,fenders, grille, etc. are what appeal to you, go with the 04,you didnt state v6 or v8 (has fulltime 4wd) or the exact prices, but personally, id keep looking for an o6 & up with lower mileage.

I'd go elsewhere. Carmax sent me an "anonymous survey" asking about my experiences. I filled it out via email and sent it last week. On Friday I got a call from their manager who left the most condescending and creepy voicemail ever refuting everything I said in that survey. What the heck kind of customer service is that? Send out a survey afterwards, and then call the guy and berate him and attempt to start a fight over a survey?

I told him that I'd make sure to tell everybody I meet how they do business, and he didn't care. So go elsewhere. You'll pay less and get just as good of a vehicle. You can take your car and have a $150 detail on it done and it will look just as good as a Carmax vehicle. Their plan is to get clean car at auctions, charge way more than they are worth, and slap a bunch of armor all on the thing. Pass..... seriously.
 
Thanks again for replies. I am continuing the search, the price on the '06 is 20,000. Bam, I am a bit suspicious of Carmax, but I have friends who have had good results with them. I like the Limiteds, and they have the only 4wd Limiteds within 200 miles.

The great thing about feedback is that it leads to other ?'s, as I expand my search, what is the forum view of Toyota Certified from the dealers? It is a marketing gimmick of course, but is there value in it?
 
$20k for a 06 with 95k miles? I've not looked at the newer one, but that seems high. I picked up my 03 Limited 4x4 (loaded with everything from navigation to rear air suspension) with 115k miles for $11,500. This was also with all documents and receipts showing scheduled maintenance done at the local Toyota dealer. It was a one owner as well. That really doesn't help with your situation, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are better deals out there. I got mine from some Ford dealer I found online, so shop around.

i hope you are just talking about the serpentine belt.. the op never stated he was getting a v8 or v6.. v6 has a timing chain and v8 has the timing belt

I just recently got an 06 F250 PSD and love it. I also have an 06 4runner and 20,000 for an 06 limited looks ok but I would go else where from carmax. here in San Antonio the carmax sux at customer service. in terms of changes wasn't there a transmission change? I know 2006 and up got a five speed compared to a four speed. hope you get a good car whatever you get!:fro:
 
20000 is too high for an 06 with that much mileage. we got our 08 sr5 v6 for 26000 with only 18,000 on the odo. I would also look elsewhere. It was also Toyota used certified, which it was one owner, came with all service records since it was new, and comes with piece of mind knowing it hasnt been in an accident either. theres a list of things it has to pass before becoming used certified, and not so much as a body panel can be replaced on it without it being disqualified.

Dang...that is too high. Here in TX, you can get do better...just pay the transfer fee for one of these:

I agree. Carmax cars are NOT better than other used cars. They give this big spill about how they go through all their cars and find everything wrong with them and fix them before they resell them. Then I walk out on the lot looking at them and find all kinds of problems with them. I would never buy from Carmax. Their advertising has everyone scammed. They are the worst in my opinion. They use young inexperienced 20 something year old people at the auctions buying cars, then bring them back to "prepare" them to be sold.

I would look elsewhere. But to answer your question. I would rather have the low mileage 04 than the high mileage 06. The differences in the two vehicles aren't worth that to me.

I agree. Used Certified costs more for the vehicle, but you get comfort in knowing it's history and that the dealer stands behind it. Usually comes with a 7 year/100,000 mile warranty or something in that vicinity.
 
Maybe the anti-CarMax sentiment is due to regional situations. Here in the Dallas area, a good number of my friends have purchased vehicles from CarMax and are happy with them and happy with the experience.
