Another Newb from Houston

Hi - been doing a bit of lurking as I'm in the market for a new 4Runner. Going to pull the trigger within the next couple of months and am in the education phase. Trying to decide which model to get and what mods I want to start with.

It is going to be a daily driver but want to take it to mild off road areas (Big Bend in Texas and eventually as I learn more Utah etc). I am a 4x4 newb so I have a lot of learning to do.

[MENTION=118673]CalamariKid[/MENTION], Howdy! I'm in Friendswood and glad to have another Texan in our club! Big Bend is a great place to off road as I go there at least once a year. Lot's of area to explore. Which gen Runner are you looking at?

Thanks for the welcome. Looking at buying a new Gen5. Just got back from Big Bend and got a flat on River Road on my 2WD Honda Pilot and just realized that if we are going to continue to explore off road areas we need to get something more suited for that use.

[MENTION=118673]CalamariKid[/MENTION], Which "River road" are you referring to? The paved one (El Camino Del Rio) that goes to Study Butte or the primitive one that goes down to Mariscal Mine? Look, I could tell you some scary stories about that road. One time, in the mid-nineties, my wife (then girlfriend) and I were offroading on the "River Road" near "La Clocha" when a band of five really scary native Mexicans road up on horse back and wanted to take my girlfriend with them across the Rio Grande to their ranch, WITHOUT me. I have only had to draw my sidearm four times in my 45 year old life. This was the first of those four times! I mean, the "leader" of these guys, NO LIE, had a long scar running down his forehead, through his creepy WHITE, left eye. Weird. Anyway, that is just one of a few really weird experiences that I have had in the Big Bend area. But, I love it and keep going back there. EVERY TEXAN should go there at least once in their life!!!!

Dirt River Road - been going there since I was a kid and never had a problem. I know there are some issues there from time to time, but so is the nature of life on the Mexican border. Your story is by far the worst of I've heard save for the poor couple that got shot years ago as they were going down the river. Turns out is was 3 kids in their early teens that did the damage. I think they are still serving time.

I'm headed back that way in March - going to do some 2 wheel off roading.
