Hey Folks!

Been lurking around various 4Runner forums the last couple of months to see which one I like best, and I decided T4R.org is the place for me. I've had my SR5 since October and loving every second of it. It's a 1999 with 150k (that's ~93,000 miles). Despite being new to me, its always been in the family. My cousin bought it new from the local Toyota dealer and he's taken very good care of it, so it was a no brainer for me when I heard he was trading up to the 4th generation.

Some pics.

Not much has been done to it thus far... tints, alarm, hitch... I did the timing belt on it before the snow started to fly (that was fun, make sure you get a tensioner compressor, I didn't and it was hell)... but apart from that its a tank, still has the original clutch and brakes on it.

Next on the list... some Hella 500's are in order, some Downey HD coils to fix the sag... we'll see what else I can get my hands on.

That's a nice 4Runner. Welcome to the forum.:biggrin2:

I'm guessing by your name your last vehicle was a Nissan?;):

Always nice to know who the previous owner was and how they've taken care of it. Did your 4Runner come with a locker?

Anyway, have fun on the trails.

Actually the Nissan was my first... and I still have it. It lives in the garage next to my 4Runner.

Here's a pic of my other money pit.

I would love to see pics of the 510 you're working on (maybe in PM or another thread)

For the new/ignorant to the 4x4 world.... how would I find this out? I have a 5spd transmission if that makes a difference.

rear electric locker

The electric locker switch would be to the left of the steering column-not the clutch start cancel switch.

I can not tell what kind of Nissan that is Nismo- and don't want to insult with a guess. What exactly is that pictured?

I thought it was an 6 series Beemer at first....

Then no, all the dash panels in that section are blanks except for the clutch cancel. I would assume it locks the hubs? Can you tell I am new to this stuff?:D

Not a problem. They are not very common as they were never offered in North America. Originally that car started off as a 1992 Nissan 240sx, coupe model.

Before shot.

In Japan, however, the coupe model was named the Silvia. Came with a 2L turbo motor and a slightly less appealing front end (according to north American marketing research)... Managed to gather all the parts to make it like its supposed to be and there she is.

Ron, NISMO is like TRD. It stands for NISsan MOtorsports (or something like that). I believe the car pictured is a 240SX. Very popular drift car, nowadays.

We are both learning

Yes the rear locker locks the rear left and right wheels to enable better traction without the slippage of a normal "open" diff.

okay I have seen 240SX's before and that is a nice Japanese look you have taken it back to

and kudos to that photographer's choice of materials to showcase/highlight it that way-nicely done

Nice rides!

You got the same runner as me but mines auto :D

Trust me, Ive only had mine a little while, and soon you will not be even CLOSE to stock lol

Yeah my buddy Kevin is quite the shutter bug. And although the car does see some sideways action, its usually due to loss of traction and not drifting. It can be setup to drift, but I much prefer to do time attack style circuit racing.

Now onto more important things... this locker... on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being a light bulb replacement and 10 being a engine rebuild... how hard would it be to install?

Most excellent. I love the old schoolers... especially 510's and 240z's. Should make for an excellent project car.

Yeah mine's an SR... such a great little two liter... and there is nothing more fun than watching a mustang owner or a corvette owner (z06 excluded) get hozed by a 4 banger. Just too fun.

Hahaha! I'm thinking of going SR in my 510 when all is said and done. My friend has one in his 510 and with 350whp it is a HOOT to drive!

Is this considered a thread jack? lol

Meh... I think we are done with the intros... I still would like to know more of this locker system... and weather i can swap it over to my truck.

Got all the tools, just need the know-how.

IMO your best bet would be to buy an aftermarket locker like ARB or an E-locker. I wouldn't think it was worth the time and money to put the factory one in. It would be a lot of money in parts and a lot of time to put the axle in and all the wiring.
