Another OBA setup with sliders as air tanks

I completed and tested out my OBA setup and I'm pleased at its performance. We spent all last week camping at Death Valley and it was nice to be able to blow out the air filters and the interior every night at camp. At the end of the trip, I filled up my tires of course.

This setup works like any other OBA, a pressure switch tells the air comp to turn on (at 80 psi) and turn off (at 105 psi). I picked this range of switch because an ARB air locker can handle this pressure w/o the need for a pressure regulator.

The air from the air comp goes into a manifold where there are multiple ports for a press switch, popoff valve, air locker solenoid valve, pressure gauge and spare ports. The manifold mounting bracket is a simple piece I welded up and bolted to the PS bracket so it's easily removable in the future.

The compressor is Air Zenith OB2 and comes with its own cooling fan. The performance is outstanding and the rebuild parts are available from Air Zenith. USA made product that will last a very long time. There is a check valve along with a high heat output hose that comes with the air comp.

The air tanks are my DIY sliders and this helps the air comp cycle less frequently. I still would like add two more alum tanks under the floor, between the sliders and the chassis rails. Any time you have air tanks, only helps out the air comp.

The comp sits on a DIY bracket on the passenger fender, next to the air box. For vibration reduction, I used vibration damping feet between the mounting plate and top of the fender. The vibes can still be felt but at acceptable level.

The air comp is being fed by an 80 amp ALN fuse and the air comp activate switch in the cab is getting its power from an aux fuse block. The switch came from CH4X4 and it's an excellent product, fit and finish for the money. The 80amp relay provided by Air Zenith is a joke in my opinion. It uses spade female connections which we know will open up over time. My air comp is used on Ebay and I can see the spades are already opening up a little bit. As you know, a poor connection makes for higher current draw and more heat which is no bueno for this application. So I opted for a 100 amp relay with ring terms from Amazon.

More pics.

The rock sliders have 1/4" NPT fittings and both of them are connected together.

The aux fuse panel is using a simple bracket made out of 1/8" alum bent to 90º, then painted black. There are two captive nuts that I was able to use for the bracket. The bracket was then drilled and tapped for the aux fuse panel.

The last pic shows the location of the air comp mounting plate and the location of the four mounting bolts.

Wow. That is unique.

Assuming that the square tubing has 1.25" inside length and each slider is 70" long, you added just under 1 gallon of capacity to your system.

I hope you are planning to do more than just blow out your interior and air filters with it though? Using any air tools or filling up tires?

Well, when I did this in the 80 using a York air comp, the pneumatic blender was a hit for making margaritas during camping :rofl: Once my air reservoir capacity increases, I'll come up with more ideas. Running air tools require a huge amount of CFM and I'm not sure if an elec air comp like mine will be able to keep up. Filling up tires is a no brainer and it does that task rather quickly. My buddy has the larger Smittybilt air comp and my system filled up the tires faster than his. It's so fast that you can actually hear the air going into the tires.

In the early '90s, I used to use the spare tire as part of the air reservoir and probably could do the same on this vehicle too. I'll have to give it some more thought as that's a huge volume to overlook for this application.

I would just keep it simple with two 3 gal air tanks where my spare tire stored, and maybe a couple more along my frame rails or on a rear bumper swing-out if I wanted to get crazy, but I'm impressed with your Macgyver-ness!
 
I also really like those slider tanks. I've built a few pipe bumpers over the years on trucks that also doubled as air tanks but never sliders. Thanks for sharing!

You can tell who the old timers are on this board, LOL!!! Might as well use every little space as possible when it comes to compressed air.

Agreed, the spare tire area is great for water and air tanks. I don't have that luxury so I'll stuff couple of tanks on the side. I scored two Land Rover suspension air tanks made of Alum. Unfortunately, they're tad too long so I'll cut them down and TIG them up one of these days.
