Another Rear Diff Mod

Hi, brand new here, introduced myself here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/new-members/96943-enough-lurking-finally-signed-up.html

So I know that the breather mod is well documented so I wont go into it too much other than where I strayed from what I have seen on here so far.

I didn't want the breather behind the gas filler door, or inside the cabin, and someone mentioned the idea of routing it to the front and putting it in the engine bay so I went with that.

Total cost = 14.35$
Total time = 2 hours (mostly being anal about routing the line, and zip tying)

disregard the bas****ized connection at the front, the auto shop was out of stock on the correct size, so I used a couple adapters. I don't like waiting for things :)

BTW, I corrected the spelling of the title, but that hasn't been reflected on the main thread, so if anyone know how to accomplish that let me know (or if you are a moderator and can fix it, even better!)
 
I may get hassled for this... What exactly does the diff breather mod do? What benefit do I get from this? Thanks ahead of time
 
It's only purpose is to move the breather higher in the vehicle to keep it dry.

My main motivation was the boat launch, I use a gravel/sand one and sometimes get pretty deep in there with the back end. I suppose I might attempt fording something deep enough to be an issue if there was someone around with a winch :)

Also, I like mods, and this one is cheap/easy/fun

It greatly reduces the possibility of sucking cold water into a hot diff during water crossings. Cheap insurance against an expensive repair and possible stranding.
 
Sorry I don't have a part #.

I drove over to the fastener store and crawled under my 4runner in the parking lot, removed the breather and went in and had them match the thread on the breather to a 1/4" i/d barbed fitting. Then I crawled back under and reinstalled it before the drive home :) Any small town auto parts store would probably have it, and certainly any industrial fastener shop would. I believe the technical name for the part is 'hose tail'.

I used 1/4" i/d fuel line, which is probably overkill, but the other guys used it, and at least I can have confidence that it wont fail.

The "technical" name is barbed nipple. I do not know the actual thread callout going into the differential housing but if you go to any industrial fluid conveyance supply (Parker, Gates, etc) store they will know what you want.
 
Nice mod. How did you route it to the engine bay?
I took it straight forward from the rear diff and zip tied to the brake lines. Mid frame where the exhaust steps over, rout it over towards the drivers side and reconnect with the brake lines, and basically follow them up into the engine bay. Not a lot of room under there for zip tying in some places... I found the easiest was the zip tie around the brake line and pipe, then slide it along into the hardest to reach places before tightening it.

Not sure how much of an advantage going to the engine bay is, realistically I doubt you would ever smell it venting into the jack compartment, but I felt like doing it this way. Also putting it out by the fuel filler is a good option if you don't mind cutting the rubber to get it through.
 
Also just noticed you have kdss, as far as i understand there are additional lines running along the frame on yours, so you might be better routing along them.

I bought 12 feet, which ended up being just enough. I would buy say 14' to be on the safe side in case you decided to take a different route to the front.
