Hello! I'm in the market to replace my stock shocks after.... 170K miles, they are garbage and I wouldn't use them on a go kart. Seriously they are garbage.

I'm looking into getting bilstein 5165 with the remote resivor, but when I was reading the specs and deciding which ones to choose I couldn't because I didnt know the stock suspension travel. Which brings me to my main question, what are the stock travels? Up and down and extended fully? Id greatly appreciate it.

Also.... Since I have a toytec 3 inch lift, ome coils in the rear, spacer in the front how does this effect the stock travel? Would it take away 3 inches of up travel on the front shocks?
Noob question. Whats a boot. I'm seeing that term alot when looking for shocks... Is it the thing the front coil sits on?

I'm new at this too, but after tons of shock research with a 3 inch lift, get stock LC shocks. go into your closest yota stealership and say "Hey, I've got a 1996 Toyota land cruiser, sell me some stock shocks." and they work. I hear some people spend 150$ for a pair, and those are 30$ each *I THINK*. My shocks aren't worn, but once they are i'm buying stock LC shocks and using those. goodluck with everything else.

The stock LC shocks dont have different length travels only the stock length. Id prefer performance, I get thT they are new shocks but I want something that can withstand high levels of heat with no fade so really the reservoir is a need. Its for the beach and when I'm cruising down to go camping & surf the morning swell I need to go relatively fast, 90 miles off road on the beach in about 4 hours. I recently just came back from one of these trips and it was very obvious I need new shocks.

Remote resis! **** yea! No idea what stock shock travel is, for reference I'm pulling 10.5" with my Bilstein 5100s. You don't care about the travel so much as how much shock you can stuff under the truck so that you can maximize travel; which obviously is just a matter of measuring from the shock mount to the bump stop, adding how deep the mount on the axle is, and then subtracting a little bit to compensate for the bump stop compressing--that will give you the maximum compressed shock length you can stuff.

Even with a spacer (that is appropriately sized) the travel won't change. Stock coilover travel is around 7" as I recall. I am pulling 8" and that is as far as the stock IFS can get before it gets hung up on down travel and the stock bump stops are limiting the up travel. And by travel, I mean what the wheel is moving, not the shock (because of the double A arm design, you get more travel at the wheel than what the shock sees; basic proportionate triangles if you want to calculate the multiplier).

Not sure about the boot, assuming it's not a CV boot. Do you have a link to where it's describing that? Hopefully some of that will help you.

P.S. - You may also want to look into getting new coilovers to replace the spacer lift. If you think you push the vehicle hard enough to need remote resis then I can't imagine the stock coilovers lasting very long before heating up, and then you can also get a more plush ride and possibly more travel. Food for thought.

Think about your needs now and a few years down the road.

An adjustable coilover will grow with you. You can adjust them to the exact lift/rake you want. Also if you change the rear coils later, you can readjust the coilovers.

Give ToyTec a call and tell them what you need. They can spec different parts, than what is on their site, per your needs.

Remember that longer rear shocks may not allow the axle to fully compress. You need to look at three things: extension length, compressed length, and travel.

I have the ome 891 coils(I think) they are 3 inches larger then stock so couldn't I get 1.5 inches more travel each way? Then i could extend the rear bump stops inside of the coil.

The true axle bumpstop is mounted on the frame. The big rubber cone inside the coil is an overload helper. Some people remove it. I have mine still in but have cut a few of the donuts off so they don't limit compression.

Coil overs are so expensive :( any one know of some for 400$ & under? The bilstein coil overs are 700$

I assume you are looking at the 9100 (or maybe it's 7100, always forget) series remote reservoir coilovers since as I recall they run about that much. Again, and I hate to always reference the 5100s since I don't have experience outside of that shock yet, but my Tundra 5100s in the front work great and are $210 for the pair (not counting coils). And I'm pretty impressed with them, and I do a lot of trail riding at 20-30mph. That doesn't seem like much, but I can guarantee it's harder terrain than you're going to see on your typical beach (and if you are planning on running through dunes and whoops, then you are gonna have a hard time without a LT setup regardless).

There's also Icons which a lot of people like, you can get remote reservoir Fox 2.0 coilovers for $270 a piece in the 5/8" (?) shaft diameter, etc. Just need to look around. And of course you can always just get used shocks and revalve them, which you may want to do anyways with new shocks.
