I read the entire thread on the sulfur smell and I'm not really sure if that's what I am experiencing. My smell is like burned rubber and exhaust. I have a 1990 so it doesn't seem like this is the same problem.
I started to notice the smell when I drove the truck really hard. Usually when the rpm's were up above 3000. But it didn't happen all the time. It was really random. It would come into the cab on the drivers side I think because usually my passengers could not smell it. For a few months, the smell would happen at random times and I thought it was because I was reving the engine too high. I slowed down somewhat and it went away.
About a month ago, it came back. I haven't been driving the hell out of the truck like I used to, it just came back for no reason that I can see. Now, the more I notice it's habits. It happens when I am slowing down. Like coming off of an exit ramp or stopping at a stop sign, whether I have had the enginge at high rpms or not. This is what made me think it was the sulfur problem but it just doesn't really smell like sulfur. The smell is kind of hard to describe, but it stinks.
Any ideas. If I can't figure it out I am going to call car talk next Saturday.
