So I've been researching the timing belt for my new 99 Runner, and have decided to do it myself. My 4runner has 125000 miles, and no maintenance records, so I figured it needed it. However, looking under the hood today I see a sticker that says a Gates timing belt was installed at "blank" miles, at "blank" location. Nobody bothered to fill It out. Does this mean it was done, or is this sticker here for when it is done? Seriously, how hard is it to pull back the cover so I can see the belt to inspect it, cause I'm not sure what to think here?

It was probably done and the mechanic wrote the mileage on the sticker with ink that washed off. I used a Gates belt and the ink on my sticker is about faded away. You should be able to get enough bolts out of the cover to see the belt and tell if it is good shape (or a Gates belt - it will have the part numer and 'Gates' on the belt).

I agree with 98OzarksRunner, those stickers come in the Gates timing belt box. Also agree you should be able to spy it without much trouble. Beings your timing belt should be done every 90,000 I'd think it reasonable to do the next one around 180,000 unless you get a waterpump leak or problem 'cause you'll be in there anyway. At least, that's the way I figure it.
I'm in that "unknown" zone on the timing belt. Just bought this 2002 with 129K on it and no maintenance history. I keep thinking "do I hold my breath" and keep driving or spend the $$ and get it done. The condition of the vehicle makes me think it was done by an independent garage so Toyota would not have a record.
