Another tranny fluid question! 220k miles and..

220k miles and the trans fluid has never been changed. No issues at the moment. No flushing but would you guys suggest a drain and fill?

I would.

Some would say if it ain't broke don't fix it. Others will say you should change it every 30,000 miles despite Toyotas recommendation to inspect it (and change if necessary) at 30K and every 60k thereafter.

The middle ground is to take a small sample and send it off to Blackstone for an analysis.

But at 220K... I would.

I got my truck with 160k and couldn't wait to change the fluid.

You obviously read enough or have basic knowledge to not do a flush on high mileage transmissions. So if you CARE about the long term reliability of this transmission, is this question even necessary? You are 130k miles PAST the 90k mile service interval.

My fluid at 160k miles was dark and nasty. It cost me $140 to do it myself including a filter replacement, dropping pan and cleaning magnets, drain bucket, an RTV. Took a few hours and (this is laughable) I own it for 90k miles, I'll look at it again.

Thank you guys! Will get her done!

pan drop filter/pan gasket kit and clean up the pan/magnets.. I use mineral spirits not any acetone for cleaning the pan debris . use a brush and a cloth .

I never used any RTV on transmissions..

Did you have to remove the exhaust to get the Trans pan down? I'll be working from the ground with the 4R on jack stands.

I'm in the same situation. 220k miles and I'm not sure if the trans fluid has ever been changed. I just got 12 quarts of Toyota type IV and I'm planning on doing several drain and fills. The trans dipstick says there's no need to change the fluid but I do a lot of towing. After that will be the diffs and transfer case fluid.

My .02...there's not much of a filter unless you consider your typical window screen to be a filter. I'd save the hassle of dropping the pan, especially for us 2UZ folks.

I'd also avoid the hassle of several drain/fill cycle, which only mixes about 3.5 quarts of new fluid with your old stuff on every change. You never get it all...think someone did the math once and you can maybe get to about an 80% new fluid this way.

Search for cooler line transmission flush. Since even the V-6 without towing package still routes the trans fluid through the radiator, you can pull the return line and use the transmission itself to pump about 4 quarts out. Add back whatever you drained (use a marked container)...lather, rinse, repeat until you're happy. Of course, the fill part of this is easier for those of us with a dipstick tube...can't remember what year the A750 lost it.

Man now you guys got me all worried! I’ve never done the tube flush way. Wonder if I can get a local shop to? I’m sure they’ll think of a regular flush. Man.... choices.

There are write-ups with photo's and clear explanations out there for both the 4 speed (dipstick style) and 5 speed (sealed with no dipstick) transmissions. If you don't want to do it, a shop might, but they will probably charge additional labor for inconvenience, which makes it even more satisfying to do it yourself.

'03 was the last year of the dipstick

Are you sure about that? The V-6 didn't even get the A750 until '04 or '05. I would've swarn they both had dipsticks for a few years before getting sealed. Think it coincided with Toyota's switch to WS from T-IV.

You're an '07. You probably don't have a dipstick tube to fill with. Life gets harder for you or your mechanic. Toyota considered it a lifetime fill. Yeah, right.

As mentioned above, do a search for the DIY procedure. Unfortunately, your fill is under the vehicle, although you can probably still drain via the cooler line. And the final level check has to be done with the fluid at operating temperature using an observation port...seems like I remember something about jumping some pins in the ODBII connector to put the TCU in a mode that will tell you when the temp is correct via certain lights on the instrument cluster.

My ‘04 V6 has the 4-speed tranny with dipstick
