Another vibration issue

New member
Long story short. Had very small vibration with stock tires. Switched to 275 70 17 KO2's at 500 miles with stock rims. I have had the tires rebalanced 3 times by DT and the vibration at 55-60 mph is still there. I will be switching to Method 701 or 704's shortly but was wondering if everyone here thinks that will solve the issue. I also thought about switching to Yoko MTG003's in same size at time of wheel change.

Do you have any more or less success with external vs internal weights? Initially my stance was “I’m not letting them put those ugly things on my wheels!” But if it clears up the shake…

Oh and I can tell you ALL about how KO2’s are a pure crapshoot to try and balance. Running a set of the old style on another vehicle and one’s just got a little 5 gram weight, while one of the rears has several 25’s and change, taking up damn near 90 degrees of a 15” rim [emoji23]

If you had a small vibration with stock tires, were those new or old?
was that vibration always there?
Was that cause/issue ever found?

Reason for the questions, are you sure the vibration was not coming from something past the tires and rims and now since you installed different tires the issue is still there?
 
I did the exact same thing and switched to 275/70 K02's at 800 miles (factory pro wheels). I had a slight vibration with the factory tires and thought going to a different tire would fix it. This wasn't the only reason that I switched tires, but the vibration is still there and at random times/speeds with the K02's. It is pretty frustrating that this seems to be such a common thing that has no definite cure with the 4runners. Before I found my new '21, I drove 5 different used ones that all had some degree of vibration with 3 of them being bad enough that I wouldn't have even considered buying them

Here we go again! KO2’s do not balance, why on earth do you want to be just like every other 4WP fanboi and run Methods and KO2’s in search of your vibration issues? There are literally dozens of other options out there…choose wisely

What a Ridiculous thing to say. Ive had them on my Sierra no problems.
 
i saw a post from a some one that went to the dealer & said it was bad wheel bearings causing the vibration at 55 to 60 mph. , he also said the dealer knows about this problem but doesn’t say any thing about it.
Any one try looking at there suspension before balance, tire change or rotation?

Has any one checked the front bearings i would never thought to check this on a new truck but i will now.

Thanks for the helpful responses. Brand new truck, yes.
Not sure if DT will check the stock wheels or not but will check.
Will also call dealer for their input :scared:
 
We liked our K02's at first until we realized all our shaking/vibration issues were because of them. Switched to 275/70/17 Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX and couldn't be happier. Rides very smooth now.

He's driving a new rig - it's extremely unlikely the bearings or suspension is the issue.


KO's are notorious for being problematic. Discount Tire is notorious for poorly balancing KO's.

I've owned over a dozen sets of KO's and KO2's - the KO2's where much more problematic then the previous version. The set I bought last year sucked balls took 5 trips to DT and replacing 2 tires- they hire kids whose job is to jam thru as many customers as fast as they can.

Have them road force balance them and make sure they give you the lbs# value of how out of round they are - there's a ton of threads on here about how this works. Discount doesn't care so much and will put the worst tires on the back. Your out the door and then after the next rotation they'll be on the front and your problem will be back with a vengeance.

We bought a new 2020 4 runner and vibration was pretty bad around 55-65 mph……took 3 weeks of force alignments and new tires but nothing worked so finally they sent the vehicle to a dealership with a master mechanic who took apart the front end and tested every part. The problem was faulty wheel bearings which were replaced and it went away. Toyota knows about this but will not do anything unless the dealership finds it and many of them have young inexperienced mechanics the do routine stuff mostly. We kept the Michelins…..lol!

Okay, so I gave up on the KO2's and had them install stock size Yokohama MTG003's. Issue gone, wife happy and truck looks just as good, especially with the new Method 316's. DT treated me very well through the entire process. I got fully reimbursed for all 5 tires and actually got money back as the Yoko's were cheaper.
