Another..."What's that noise?" Thread

Assuming it's just the wheel bearing and no other work, I would say 1 man hour. I haven't done a wheel bearing on a car in a long time but I can repack the wheel bearings on my boat trailer in about 45 minutes each. I understand that bearings for the 4Runner are a sealed unit of sorts, so it may be less than that. Diagnostic time to confirm it's the bearing and not something else may take another 1/2 hour.

Before you start:
1.) Take off your front CV dust cap and make sure you have the right socket size to get the nut off (its BIG at 35mm)
2. Grab yourself a MAP gas torch from a local hardware store (heat was my bestie while doing mine)
3.) Grab a tube of anti-seize for reassembly
4.) Make sure you have a torque wrench
[CV Axle Nut= 217ft/lbs] <---- I put my wheel back on without the dust cover and lowered it to the ground so I could torque it all the way.
[Wheel hub bolts= 100ft/lbs]
[Brake caliper bolts= 77ft/lbs]
5. Use jack stands!
6. Make sure the 6-pack of whatever is ice cold and hop to it!

'04 Sport, 6 cyl, 4WD, 157,000 mileage

Noticeable left front whining/whirring sound 15-20 mph, then a bit louder up to about 50 mph, still there, but then the road noise drowns it out. Noticed a barely detectable scraping sound recently, similar to what might come from the wheel hub, when coasting 15 mph (have to turn the radio off to hear it).

No problems steering/turning, braking, stopping, alignment, suspension (far as I can tell). I thought it could be a bad tire. They are year-old Michelin Defenders, about 10K on them. The sound is similar to lousy tires with 20K on them, something Michelins don't do, unless it's a bad tire, which I guess is not unheard of.

Brake job all around at 110,000 miles, front left caliper replaced, about ready for new pads all around, so that can't be ruled out.

What's wrong doctor? Thanks for any ideas.

Had that issue it’s your wheel hubs most likely I think I paid around $400 to have it replaced I don’t remember the exact cost as I had all the rotors, breaks and tires replaced at the same time came out to around $1500 total (not including the $1200 for the new tires.
